Fire, Flavour & a New Braai Champion

The heat was real and the stakes even higher as Capegate Shopping Centre wrapped up another unforgettable CG Braai Challenge. After a series of high-pressure cook-offs and a thrilling R800 trolley dash, Huwitt Strydom emerged as the 2025 Braai Champion, claiming the title with a bold coffee-rubbed ribeye and silky red wine reduction.

The annual competition, a staple on Capegate’s events calendar, drew food enthusiasts from across the region. Ten finalists battled it out in three gruelling rounds, judged by acclaimed chef Bertus Basson and returning champion Lindley Hendricks. Each stage tested technical skill, originality, and the unmistakable spirit of the South African braai.

“The CG Braai Challenge brings South African food culture and community to life. There’s real heart behind every dish, and the passion from our contestants is what makes this event stand out. Huwitt took a bold approach, and it paid off.”

said Zoë Enslin, Marketing Manager at Capegate Shopping Centre

Strydom’s winning dish was a masterclass in balance: rich, tender beef contrasted by the sharp depth of a silky red wine reduction. The judges praised his control of the coals, precision timing, and confident flavours.

The top three finalists impressed the live audience with unforgettable performances. Chad Milne secured second place with his Chops & Sausage Braai Fusion — a flavour-packed dish showcasing both technique and tenderness. Alvirno Coetzee claimed third with his lamb curry chops paired with a classic South African potato salad, earning the crowd’s applause for bold, aromatic, and local flavours.
