South African Animation Directors Win International Emmy for Tabby McTat
South African directors Jac Hamman and Sarah Scrimgeour made history last night when Tabby McTat, the BBC Christmas special they directed, won the International Emmy for Kids: Animation in New York. Working remotely from Woodstock, Cape Town, Jac and Sarah brought to life Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s beloved picture book. Narrated by Critics Choice Super nominee Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who), the animated feature was the most-watched UK broadcaster animation of the 2023 festive season, with over 8.6 million viewers.
This marks the second consecutive International Emmy win in the category for South African directors. In 2023, The Smeds and The Smoos, another adaptation of a Donaldson-Scheffler classic, directed by South Africa‘s Daniel Snaddon and Samantha Cutler, also took home the prestigious award.
A Dream Realized
“Growing up, you dream of winning an award like this, but it feels impossible. To achieve this as a South African is incredible. We’re so proud of our team.”
says Jac Hamman
Despite their win, Jac and Sarah could not attend the awards ceremony.
“We’re on the other side of the world and busy with other projects, which makes it difficult to attend such big events,”.
Sarah explains
However, the duo remains hopeful for future opportunities to celebrate their success in person.
A Tale of Friendship and Growth
Now streaming on Showmax, Tabby McTat tells the heartwarming story of a musical cat and his busker friend Fred. After Fred is taken away following an accident, Tabby McTat must navigate life alone, exploring themes of friendship, separation, and personal growth.
Jac was particularly drawn to the story’s emotional depth.
“It’s a mature message about relationships evolving and the temporary nature of life. I wanted parents watching with their kids to feel these themes deeply.”
International Success and Recognition
Produced by Magic Light Pictures, Tabby McTat has already earned accolades, including Best Animation: Preschool at the BANFF World Media Festival and the Audience Award at the New York International Children’s Film Festival. It’s also been nominated for a Rose d’Or Award and other prestigious honors.
This marks the sixth BBC Christmas special directed by Jac and Sarah, who previously helmed the award-winning Superworm. Their involvement showcases South African talent’s growing influence in global animation.
A Cape Town Connection
While Tabby McTat was animated in the UK, many South Africans contributed to its success, including art director Shannan Taylor, lighting lead Armand Filmalter, and animators like Depesh Cara and Dominic Seeber.
“There’s a strong South African work ethic, and the team brought so much life to Axel Scheffler’s illustrations,”.
says Sarah
Bringing British Traditions to Life
Although the story is quintessentially British, the South African directors found fresh perspectives.
“The first time I visited London, I was blown away by its iconic landmarks. We drew on those experiences to bring authenticity to the animation, always consulting locals on the team.”
Jac recalls
A Heartfelt Collaboration
The short film features an impressive cast, including BAFTA nominees Rob Brydon (Gavin and Stacey) and Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (Gangs of London). Jac and Sarah relished the opportunity to direct such seasoned performers.
“They were incredibly professional and open to working with us as young South African directors,”.
Jac says
