Tropika Island of Treasure Lands Four NFTA Nominations

South African reality television continues to make its mark, and Tropika Island of Treasure is getting some well-deserved recognition. The popular competition series has secured four nominations at the 2026 National Film & TV Awards South Africa (NFTA), putting both the production and its host, Zanele Potelwa, in the spotlight.

For a show that has become a familiar part of South African Wednesday night entertainment, the nominations represent more than another awards-season milestone. They reflect the appeal of local television that brings together competition, personality, storytelling and the unpredictable drama of human relationships.

Four Nominations, One Major Moment for Local TV

Season 12 has received nominations in two major categories: Best Competition Show and Best Non-Scripted TV Series.

Meanwhile, broadcaster Zanele Potelwa has earned individual recognition with nominations for Best Female TV Personality and Best TV Presenter for her work as the show’s host.

Her double nomination adds another dimension to the recognition. Hosting a reality competition involves more than introducing challenges and announcing results. It requires connecting with contestants, navigating emotional moments and keeping audiences invested as the competition unfolds.

Potelwa’s recognition highlights the importance of strong personalities in shaping how audiences experience South African entertainment.

Why Reality Television Still Has Our Attention

Reality television thrives on something audiences understand instinctively: people.

The shifting alliances, unexpected disagreements, personal victories and pressure-filled challenges create moments that extend beyond the competition itself. Viewers aren’t simply watching contestants chase a prize; they’re following personalities and relationships as they evolve.

That formula remains central to Tropika Island of Treasure, which combines physical challenges, strategic gameplay and interpersonal drama against the backdrop of Réunion Island.

Backed by Clover’s Tropika brand, the production has also demonstrated how entertainment properties can become part of a brand’s cultural presence, creating experiences that audiences follow well beyond traditional advertising.

According to Clover Brand Manager: Dairy Fruit Mix, Sveti Kovatcheva, the four nominations recognise the creativity, passion and collaborative effort behind the production, as well as Potelwa’s contribution to the show’s success.

The Competition Is Far From Over

With Season 12 still unfolding on SABC 1, the awards recognition arrives while the contestants have plenty left to prove.

The remaining episodes promise increasingly tense Sunset Ceremonies, shifting alliances, unexpected twists and physically demanding challenges as contestant duos compete for the R1 million grand prize.

The stakes are getting higher, and viewers are yet to discover which partnership will survive the pressure and ultimately take home the winnings.

For audiences following the journey, there’s still plenty of reason to tune in every week.

South Africans Have a Say in the Awards

Public voting for the 2026 National Film & TV Awards South Africa is officially open, giving viewers an opportunity to support the productions and personalities they believe deserve recognition.

Fans can cast their votes through the official NFTA voting platform, with voting closing on 17 November 2026 at 12:00.

Catch Tropika Island of Treasure Season 12 every Wednesday at 21:00 on SABC 1, with a repeat every Thursday at 18:00 on S3.

Four nominations have put the show in the awards conversation, but the season’s biggest moments may still be ahead.
