White Star Returns to KZN With ‘Own Your Shine’ Homecoming
White Star Makes a Powerful Comeback to KZN With Heartfelt Homecoming Meal: ‘Own Your Shine’
White Star, South Africa’s most loved and trusted maize meal brand, has officially returned to KwaZulu-Natal—and it’s doing so with heart, heritage, and a powerful message of pride. Through its vibrant new campaign, “Own Your Shine,” White Star is rekindling its deep-rooted connection with the people of KZN by celebrating everything that makes the province truly extraordinary: its culture, its cuisine, and its community.
For generations, White Star has been more than just maize meal. It has been a source of comfort, warmth, and togetherness for families across South Africa. Its presence in KZN homes has always been woven into daily life—from morning porridge shared before school to hearty plates of pap served at festive gatherings. Now, with this meaningful homecoming campaign, White Star honours its legacy while embracing a bright new chapter with the communities that helped shape its story.
Celebrating KZN Through Its Brightest Stars
At the core of “Own Your Shine” are three proudly KZN-born personalities who embody the resilience, creativity, and spirit of the province:
Zamani Mbatha
The acclaimed actor and Umlazi native represents ambition, youth empowerment, and the strength of family roots.

Azana
The award-winning Afro-soul singer brings her golden voice and emotional storytelling to the campaign, capturing the essence of homecomings and belonging.

Chef Lucia Mthiyane
A celebrated culinary force, Chef Lucia highlights the rich flavours and traditions of KZN cuisine—bringing authenticity, heritage, and heart to the campaign’s meals and activations.

Together, these ambassadors bring local pride to life, making the campaign not just a relaunch but a celebration of identity.
Community First: Bringing White Star Back to the People
From Durban to Pietermaritzburg, Umlazi to KwaMashu, White Star is rolling out vibrant local activations, community upliftment initiatives, and township experiences designed to reconnect with households across the province.
The campaign will include:
- Shisa Nyama activations
- Product tastings and sampling
- Store visits and community engagements
- Township and media events
- Exciting consumer rewards to bring value straight to KZN families
Every activation is crafted to honour the heartbeat of KZN—its people.
A Celebration of Culture: Limited-Edition Beaded Wooden Spoons
One of the most meaningful highlights of the campaign is White Star’s partnership with Cosmo Extraordinary Creations, a local artisan collective celebrated for crafting stunning beadwork inspired by Zulu culture.
To honour the deep heritage of KZN, this collaboration introduces a limited-edition series of beaded wooden spoons—a symbol of tradition, family, and authentic home-cooked meals.
Wooden spoons hold a special place in preparing pap, used to stir and shape maize meal with care. Now, adorned with handcrafted beadwork, they become a bridge between Zulu artistry and generational food traditions, creating a powerful celebration of culture at the heart of every kitchen.
“Our beadwork tells the story of Zulu culture and tradition, and to see it paired with something as cherished as White Star pap feels like a perfect harmony of heritage and community.”
Cosmo Mafoti, the founder, shares:
Honouring KZN’s Spirit
“KwaZulu-Natal holds a powerful place in the heart of our national narrative. Through this campaign, we are honouring the proud spirit of KwaZulu-Natal and celebrating local families with a brand that has always belonged here. No matter where life takes us, the taste of home will always be White Star.”
says Jonita Cuff, Marketing Manager for White Star
With its heartfelt homecoming, community-centred initiatives, cultural collaborations, and a call for everyone to Own Their Shine, White Star’s return to KZN is more than a relaunch—it’s a celebration of heritage, unity, and home.
