Thabiso Ramotshela Delivers Heart-Wrenching Performance in Youngins Season 3
Give this young man his flowers already! No, scratch that — in the words of Youngins fans, just give him his SAFTA already.

Only nine episodes into Youngins Season 3, and Thabiso Ramotshela, who plays the beloved Mahlatse, has viewers either wrapped around his finger or reaching for tissues every time he’s on screen. His raw, emotional portrayal of a young man battling poverty and self-doubt has struck a deep chord with audiences nationwide.

This season, Mahlatse’s story is a reminder of the shame and pressure poverty places on young people — especially on a Grade 10 learner whose biggest concerns should be passing his exams, hanging out with friends, and dreaming about the girl he likes. But when he loses his scholarship, Mahlatse’s world collapses. He’s forced to grow up fast, hustle to survive, and figure out how to stay in school to avoid returning to the life he’s desperate to escape.

When we caught up with Thabiso Ramotshela, the young actor reflected on what it meant to step into Mahlatse’s shoes for one last time.
“This season was definitely emotionally draining. I felt a deep empathy for Mahlatse. Being a teenager is hard enough without worrying about how you’re going to fund your own education. That’s a heavy load.”
he admitted
Ramotshela shared that even off-set, he carried Mahlatse’s emotions with him to ensure authenticity.
“If I didn’t immerse myself in his world, it would’ve shown on screen,”.

A Powerful On-Screen Connection
One of the most moving elements of the season has been Mahlatse’s relationship with his mother, Mary, played by Maki Mokhitli. Their scenes together have left audiences teary-eyed, revealing the emotional toll of poverty on South African families.
“Working with Maki Mokhitli was an honour. We really held space for each other, especially in the emotional scenes. Their story reflects so many South African households — it’s a mirror of our society and how poverty strips away dignity.”

Lessons from Mahlatse’s Journey
If Ramotshela could give advice to Mahlatse, he says he’d tell him to stop carrying the world on his shoulders.
“I’d tell him it’s okay not to have control over everything. He’s only a teenager. His job is to pass, be a good friend, and stay out of trouble. And most importantly — ask for help.”
Despite the hardships, Mahlatse’s story isn’t just one of pain. It’s also a testament to resilience, friendship, and hustle.
“His friendship with the Olifants Five is so real. It’s tested this season, but it shows how much he cares. And his hustle — it’s sometimes misguided, sure, but it’s a reflection of so many young people today trying to make something of themselves.”

The SAFTA Buzz and a Heart of Gratitude
Viewers have been vocal about Ramotshela’s performance, calling for him to receive a SAFTA nomination. The young actor remains humble.
“I feel amazing and grateful. I do this for the kids who are really living what Mahlatse goes through. The character was inspired by my dad’s journey — how he grew up and what he faced. There are many Mahlatses out there, and I want them to know: I see you.”
