Relay Jeans Turns 40: Denim, Culture and Reinvention

Forty years in fashion is no small achievement, particularly in an industry where trends change overnight and cultural relevance is constantly being redefined. But some brands manage to become more than just labels. They become part of people’s identities.

South African denim institution Relay Jeans is celebrating that journey with RJ40 x Denim Obsessions, an anniversary experience that brought together fashion, music, art and community at The Playground in Braamfontein.

With more than 300 guests in attendance, the celebration was a reminder that denim has never simply been about what you wear. It is about how you choose to express yourself.

Four Decades of Denim, One Evolving Identity

Since entering South Africa‘s fashion landscape four decades ago, Relay Jeans has remained connected to a universal wardrobe essential while witnessing generations reinterpret what denim means to them.

From classic denim-on-denim combinations to distressed finishes, oversized silhouettes and personalised streetwear, jeans have consistently provided a canvas for individuality.

For its 40th anniversary, Relay Jeans chose to celebrate the people behind that evolution rather than simply revisit its history.

The event, created in partnership with Denim Obsessions, a creative platform by fashion house Project Inflamed, brought together customers, creatives, musicians, content creators and fashion enthusiasts for an experience built around self-expression.

According to Akhona Booi, Senior Marketing Manager for Relay Jeans, the milestone represents a relationship that extends beyond the brand itself.

The next chapter, she suggests, belongs to the people who continue to make Relay Jeans their own.

Making Denim Personal Through Creative Expression

At the centre of RJ40 was an idea that feels particularly relevant to today’s fashion generation: personal style should never be a copy-and-paste exercise.

Rather than keeping guests at a distance from the creative process, the experience invited them to participate.

Project Inflamed introduced interactive customisation stations featuring Stylegod Badges, distressing and dyeing, as well as rip-and-repair techniques. Artist Samurai Farai also transformed clothing into wearable art, demonstrating how familiar garments can become individual creative statements.

It was an approach that celebrated the growing appeal of custom fashion, where personalisation, experimentation and creative reuse challenge the idea that style must always come straight off a retail shelf.

Relay Jeans also opened a dedicated pop-up store, allowing guests to shop the collection and personalise selected pieces.

Braamfontein Becomes a Meeting Point for Fashion and Music

Of course, no celebration of South African youth culture would be complete without music.

The Playground became a meeting point for different creative communities, with performances from Sir Kae 1, LouLou, Latty & Thato, Hungani, Uncle PartyTime and Mpumi Mlambo.

Headline performances by Njelic and Aymos brought the energy, connecting the fashion experience to the sounds and rhythms that continue to shape South Africa‘s contemporary music scene.

Beyond the performances, photographer Shane Mangxangaza captured guests’ individual interpretations of denim against a custom Relay Jeans denim wall.

Food from Filthy Moustache, coffee and denim-inspired glazed doughnuts from Krispy Kreme, and Six Dogs blue gin cocktails added to the atmosphere.

The Next Generation Gets to Define What Comes Next

What makes a 40-year milestone meaningful is not simply how long a brand has existed, but whether it can remain relevant to people who were not even born when its journey began.

For Relay Jeans, RJ40 x Denim Obsessions offered an opportunity to connect its heritage with a generation that values individuality, creative freedom and experiences that bring people together.

The collaboration also highlighted the value of partnerships between established fashion brands and independent creative platforms in creating experiences that extend beyond traditional retail.

Four decades later, denim remains a constant, but the way people wear, customise and interpret it continues to change.

And perhaps that is the real message behind Relay Jeans’ anniversary: staying relevant does not mean standing still. It means giving people the freedom to redefine what you represent.

40 YEARS DEEP. 4EVER UNDEFINED.
