Married at First Sight South Africa has kept viewers hooked for 11 weeks, delivering intense emotion, drama, and heartfelt moments. Airing every Sunday at 6 PM on Mzansi Magic and streaming on Showmax, the show follows four couples navigating married life in real time: Palesa Mphaki and Tshepo Miya, Makoto Phumodi and Nkuleleko Mahlangu, Themba Khosa and Nelisa Ntabeni, and Portia Baloyi and Bongani Luvalo.
In a recent episode, tensions ran high, especially for Portia and Bongani, who shared an intimate conversation about grief following the recent passing of Portia’s father.
We caught up with Bongani, who opened up about his MAFS journey, his wife, and what he’s learned along the way.
Why did you join the show?
“I joined Married at First Sight to try a different approach in finding a wife—to cut out options and choice and see if one can meet someone committed to marriage. I wanted to be intentional about building a marriage, family, and home.”
First impressions of Portia:
“When I first saw my wife, I thought, ‘it doesn’t get more real than this.’”
Emotional preparation:
“I generally live in therapy, not because I have deep issues, but because it’s a tool I need in life. My therapist and I drew scenarios once it was confirmed I’d participate. It took a toll, but my toolbox helps me navigate challenges, positively or negatively.”
Handling grief and marriage challenges:
“The passing of Portia’s dad was a challenge. Traditionally, I wasn’t recognised as her husband, and I had to leave the country for almost two weeks. I couldn’t fully be there for her, which was tough.”
Staying calm amid conflict:
“Learning when something is about me or not has helped. I don’t take things personally and step back to approach situations with less emotion.”
Marriage admiration:
“I admire Nelisa and Themba. They came with intention, respect, and give each other the benefit of the doubt every day.”
Personal growth:
“This experience cemented that I love love, and I still have work to do in dealing with abandonment and rejection.”
Public recognition:
“People are recognising me as the guy from MAFS. Most get my name wrong, but they are friendly and reassuring, wishing our marriage well.”
Why viewers should keep watching:
“People should continue watching because it’s a relatable story of how people grow into each other. More ups and downs are coming, and viewers get to witness it all.”
