Absa Unveils Groundbreaking Brand TVC Exploring AI, Identity, and the Story Behind the Numbers

In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, data, and automation, Absa has launched a bold and thought-provoking new brand television commercial that redefines the intersection of technology and humanity. Titled “The Story Behind the Numbers,” the campaign is the latest evolution of Absa’s acclaimed #WeSeeYourStory initiative—an extension of the 2024 brand repositioning #YourStoryMatters.

This next chapter in Absa’s brand journey signifies a crucial shift: from acknowledging customer stories to actively responding to them. Whether through inclusive financial tools, product innovation, or community-driven engagement, Absa’s promise is clear—#WeSeeYourStory is about building meaningful connections in the age of algorithms.

At the core of this campaign is an extraordinary, unscripted conversation between award-winning financial journalist Fifi Peters and her AI-generated clone—a lifelike digital twin meticulously trained to reflect her voice, tone, emotional intelligence, and thought patterns. The result is a deeply introspective dialogue that challenges the viewer to contemplate the boundaries between code and consciousness, machine and memory.

The campaign was brought to life through a pioneering collaboration between Avatar Agency, 99C, and the innovative minds at MonkeyDonkey. Together with Absa, they conceptualised and built an experience that is as visually stunning as it is emotionally resonant.

Sue and Stu Stobbs, co-founders of MonkeyDonkey, likened the process to “mixing code with jazz—part precision, part improvisation, and a whole lot of heart.” They emphasized that the goal wasn’t just to create a bot, but to sculpt a believable human reflection. The process included:

  • Verified biographical and career data
  • In-depth interviews to capture Fifi’s tone, rhythm, and emotional depth
  • Cutting-edge AI tools for voice and visual generation
  • A custom orchestration engine to guide narrative tone and reflective thought

Fifi’s digital twin was officially “born” on 14 May 2025 at 13:09. Just a week later, the clone took part in what has since been described as one of the most compelling interviews of Fifi’s career—a conversation made possible through AI, but made meaningful by human insight.

The 95-second hero film opens with a stirring question: “Can data really see the human behind the numbers?” From there, the piece unfolds into a beautifully crafted exploration of identity, legacy, and Africa’s future—anchored by a conversation only AI could enable, but only a human could make significant.
