Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Review: Is It Worth R25 999?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 has arrived, and it comes with a hefty price tag of R25 999, a R6 000 increase from last year’s model. The big question: Is it worth the investment? After using the phone for a week, here are some thoughts on the design, performance, and overall value.

Industrial Design & Build Quality

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is impressive when it comes to build quality. Its premium materials, including Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both sides and a reinforced hinge, make the device feel solid and durable. The hinge, smaller and more robust than previous models, also gives the phone an IP48 rating, making it water-resistant up to 5 meters for 30 minutes. However, as with all foldables, dust remains a concern.

While Samsung claims that the new hinge reduces the screen crease, it’s still noticeable over time. Compared to older models, the crease visibility is significantly reduced, but it hasn’t been completely eliminated.

The flat edges of the Z Flip 6 are visually appealing and give the device a sleek, modern look. However, these edges make it slightly more challenging to flip the phone open compared to competitors, which has rounded edges.

Screen Experience

The Z Flip 6 features a 6.7-inch dynamic AMOLED display on the inside with a buttery-smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The display is bright, vibrant, and excellent for most use cases, from scrolling Instagram to gaming. The front screen remains a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED panel, which while bright and vibrant, lacks the utility seen in rival foldables like its competitors, where the entire front of the device is a usable screen.

Unfortunately, out of the box, the Z Flip 6 limits what apps can run on the front screen, relying on pre-installed widgets and select apps. While users can install Samsung’s Good Lock app to enable more app functionality, it feels restrictive compared to other foldables that offer full app access right from the start.

Performance & Battery Life

Powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and 12GB of RAM, the Z Flip 6 offers plenty of power for gaming, video editing, and multitasking. Games like Real Racing 3 run without a hitch, delivering an experience comparable to Samsung’s flagship models like the Galaxy S24.

That said, the 4,000mAh battery remains a weak point. While it’s sufficient for light use, heavy users creating Instagram Reels or TikToks may find themselves reaching for a charger more often than they’d like. Battery life hasn’t improved much from the Z Flip 5, and that could be a dealbreaker for some.

Camera Performance

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is equipped with a 12MP ultra-wide and a 50MP main camera, along with a 10MP selfie camera. While the phone’s cameras are decent, they don’t quite compete with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or the iPhone 15 Pro Max. For everyday photography and social media, though, they do the job well enough. The real advantage comes from the form factor, allowing the phone to act as its own tripod for hands-free photos and vlogging.

Is It Worth It?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is undoubtedly a great phone. Its design, hinge improvements, and performance are top-notch. However, the R25 999 price tag, combined with some limitations like battery life and the restricted functionality of the front screen, may give potential buyers pause. That said, for anyone invested in the flip phone form factor, it’s hard to go wrong with this one.

If you’re on the fence, Samsung offers great trade-in options that can help bring down the cost, making the Z Flip 6 a more attractive option for current Galaxy users. Ultimately, if you’re looking for a solid foldable with premium build quality, the Z Flip 6 is an excellent choice. Just be prepared for a few quirks along the way.
