Santi’s in Sunninghill: Pizza, People and Purpose
SEO Meta Description:
Discover Santi’s Bar and Grill in Sunninghill, a local institution known for its legendary pizza, hearty meals, and warm community spirit since 1997.
Santi’s Bar and Grill has been serving up hearty meals and lasting memories in Sunninghill since 1997—long before the suburb became what it is today. Nestled in The Square Shopping Centre, Santi’s remains a neighbourhood favourite, where long-time regulars still sit at the same tables they did two decades ago, and where every dish comes with a story.

Owner Joe Meldau has been at the heart of it all from day one.
“We opened here when this was still bush. Where Checkers stands now, there was a golf driving range, and the centre wasn’t even finished.”

But Joe’s food journey began long before Santi’s. In the early 1980s, he ran Arlecchinos, an iconic Italian-style café in Orange Grove, home to the country’s first outdoor coffee bar.
“We had to change the law to make it happen,”.

It’s also where Joe mastered the art of pizza—learning from an Italian chef despite their language barrier.

That passion for pizza sparked his signature dish: Joe’s Special.
“I mixed Italian salami, green peppers, onions, olives, chilli, and garlic, then baked it. The salami crisped perfectly. It became a hit. For every other pizza we sell, we sell five Joe’s Specials.”

Santi’s is known for its massive menu—365 dishes to be exact.
“Rustic, generous, and packed with flavour. Everything is homemade—from the burger buns and patties to the pickles and chilli sauce.”
Joe explains
Originally called De Santi Trattoria, named after Joe and his brothers (all named after saints), the restaurant has evolved alongside the shopping centre. While seating has reduced from 600 to 100 over the years, its loyal customer base has stayed strong, with many celebrating milestones here across generations.

Joe’s energy extends beyond the kitchen. He also runs Highveld Tree Fellers, a thriving tree-felling and firewood business, and a Galito’s Flame Grilled outlet nearby.
So, what keeps him going?
“Honestly? I love people. My nephew once said, ‘My uncle is in the people business.’ And it’s true.”
he says
At home, Joe taps into his Lebanese roots, enjoying mezze platters and home-cooked favourites. His personal picks from the menu?
“A simple margherita pizza, seafood di mari pasta, or our ribs—if you don’t like them, I’ll pay for them.”
Though he’s busier than ever, Joe isn’t done dreaming.
“I believe in South Africa. I train people, mentor them, and help them grow. This restaurant is a stepping stone. And I’ve got something new brewing—watch this space.”
