First SA Services Firm Commits to Science-Based Sustainability

South African services leader Empact Group has released its inaugural Sustainability Report, marking a pivotal step in the organisation’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and measurable environmental, social, and governance (ESG) progress. Covering the period from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025, the report outlines how sustainability is being embedded across operations and the broader supply chain to create meaningful long-term impact.

A Strategy Built on Five Sustainability Pillars

Empact Group’s sustainability journey is guided by five core priorities:

  • Empowering people to prosper
  • Innovating for energy efficiency
  • Reducing and managing waste
  • Leveraging supply chain partnerships for impact
  • Embedding diversity and inclusivity in the workplace

These pillars shape the company’s approach to responsible growth while aligning business performance with social and environmental value.

Alignment With Global Sustainability Goals

The report demonstrates deliberate alignment with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing Empact Group’s intention to address environmental impact, expand opportunities for social and economic inclusion, and strengthen governance processes across the organisation.

Leading the Way With Science-Based Targets

Notably, Empact Group has become the first South African services company to sign up to the Science Based Target Initiative, signalling a commitment to measurable emissions reduction. The company is actively exploring scalable solutions to lower Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions while collaborating with suppliers and service providers to mitigate Scope 3 emissions throughout its value chain.

Investing in People and Inclusive Growth

Beyond environmental priorities, the report highlights Empact Group’s focus on employee well-being, particularly among minimum-wage earners in the services sector. Initiatives spanning workplace safety, training and development, and the inclusion of differently abled employees reflect a culture centred on dignity, empowerment, and opportunity.

“Sustainability is a strategic imperative at Empact Group. This inaugural report reflects the actions we’ve taken to embed sustainability priorities into the core of our business. For our investors and partners, it offers a transparent view of how we’re building long-term value whilst staying true to our purpose.”

CEO Alan Quinn emphasised the strategic importance of sustainability:

A Long-Term Vision Rooted in Care

Framed by the company’s “We Care – Doing Right by You” philosophy, the Sustainability Report positions ESG performance as central to Empact Group’s operational strategy and future growth. By combining science-based climate action with social inclusion and governance integrity, the organisation is setting a benchmark for responsible leadership in South Africa’s services industry.
