Mzansi’s rising fashion stars turned heads at the Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designers Award presented by Durban Fashion Fair, as more than 130 students from nine colleges showcased their garments in the most exciting and largest first round of judging to date.
With this year’s theme “Marvels of Mzansi,” students drew inspiration from South Africa’s diverse identity – blending landscapes, cityscapes, history, and culture into bold, captivating designs. The event marked a significant evolution for the competition, which continues to grow in size, scope, and prestige.
“Big thanks must go to the Hollywood Foundation and the newly-launched Race Coast for their incredible support in helping to drive and sustain this element of the Hollywoodbets Durban July. It’s exciting to see the brilliant display of talent and the number of participating colleges grow to nine.”
said Fashion Programme Director Tiffany Prior
The judging panel included fashion leaders and industry experts such as Nonhlanhla Khumalo (Durban Fashion Fair), Vuyisile Ngobese (Hollywood Foundation), and designers Zama Mathe, Kathrin Kidger, and Sandile Duke Mngadi, who were collectively impressed by the level of innovation and storytelling in this year’s entries.
“This year’s theme encouraged designers to explore what makes South Africa truly remarkable. The students clearly drew inspiration from our rich culture, heritage, and the vibrant world of entertainment.”
said Vuyisile Ngobese
Bigger Prizes, Bolder Dreams

Ngobese added

Fashion That Tells a Story
Renowned designer and judge Kathrin Kidger emphasized the importance of storytelling and innovation:
“We want to see material re-imagined, silhouettes disrupted, and styling that feels daring and intentional. In the age of repetition, originality has become a superpower.”
She noted that this year’s focus shifted towards finish and technique, marking a shift in how young designers are developing their craft.
The Road to the Finals
The 25 semi-finalists will present their garments at the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge on 7 June, with the top ten finalists announced on the same day. These finalists will go on to showcase their designs at two prestigious events:
