A brand refresh is about more than changing a logo or introducing a new colour palette. For established media brands, it’s an opportunity to reflect on how audiences connect, what they value and how those relationships evolve in a rapidly changing media landscape.
That’s the thinking behind Jacaranda FM’s refreshed brand identity, a visual evolution that puts everyday happiness, human connection and the simple pleasures of life at the centre of its next chapter.
The South African radio station is introducing a simplified logo, an expanded palette of purple shades and a new brand font designed to bring more personality to its visual identity. But beneath the refreshed appearance is a bigger question: what does it mean to be a feel-good brand in a world where people’s attention is constantly being pulled in different directions?

Finding Joy Beyond the Big Moments
In a culture that often celebrates major achievements, expensive experiences and picture-perfect lifestyles, Jacaranda FM is leaning into something much more relatable: the happiness found in ordinary moments.
The thinking is informed by Time Out South Africa’s The Joy Revolution research, which explored what brings people happiness and fulfilment.
The findings offer an interesting perspective on modern life. According to the research, 81% of respondents said spending time with people they like gives them energy, while the same percentage identified spending time with loved ones as one of their happiest experiences. Another 74% said simply resting brings them an equal sense of satisfaction.
It’s a reminder that happiness doesn’t always require a holiday, a major celebration or an elaborate weekend plan.
Sometimes it’s a conversation with a friend, a favourite song during the morning commute, laughing with family or finally getting a moment to switch off.
These everyday experiences form the foundation of Jacaranda FM’s Feel Good philosophy.
“Being a feel-good brand has always been central to who we are, but it’s also about understanding what that means to people in their everyday lives,”.
says Vuyani Dombo, Managing Director of Jacaranda FM
The intention is to make the station part of those moments, offering listeners a familiar connection throughout their day.
A New Look With Familiar Personality
Visually, the refreshed identity maintains purple as the defining colour of Jacaranda FM while introducing additional shades to create more depth and flexibility.
The simplified logo signals a cleaner, more contemporary direction, while the new typeface introduces a playful detail, with a smile woven into almost every letter.
It’s a subtle creative decision, but one that reinforces the personality the station wants to communicate: approachable, positive and recognisably human.
For a media brand with an established audience, refreshing its identity also means balancing familiarity with reinvention. The challenge is to evolve without losing the emotional connections that made people recognise and trust the brand in the first place.
Radio Is No Longer Just About the Airwaves
Perhaps the most significant part of this evolution is what it says about the changing role of radio.
While traditional broadcasting remains central to Jacaranda FM, its relationship with audiences increasingly extends into digital content, social media, live experiences and brand partnerships.
Today’s listeners don’t necessarily engage with media in one place or at one particular time. They might catch a presenter on the radio, discover a conversation through social media, watch digital content later or encounter the brand at a live activation.
That shift requires media brands to think beyond their traditional platforms and create consistent experiences wherever their audiences spend time.
Dombo says the refreshed identity is intended to bring the same Jacaranda feeling across these different touchpoints, ensuring that its personality remains recognisable beyond the broadcast studio.
The Power of Feeling Connected
Jacaranda FM‘s refreshed identity ultimately reflects a broader idea about the role media can play in people’s lives.
In an increasingly digital world, where content is endless and attention is fragmented, the brands that stand out may not necessarily be the loudest. They may be the ones that create familiarity, encourage participation and give people a reason to feel connected.
For South African audiences navigating busy schedules, everyday pressures and an ever-changing media environment, that proposition feels particularly relevant.
The new identity is a visual expression of an existing promise, rather than a departure from the station’s roots.
Because sometimes the most meaningful form of reinvention isn’t about becoming something completely different. It’s about finding new ways to make people feel something they’ve always associated with you.
And for Jacaranda FM, that feeling is joy.
