Time Out Pretoria Launch October 2026-1

Time Out Pretoria Puts the Capital in the Spotlight

Pretoria is more than government buildings, university campuses and a city that turns purple every spring. From neighbourhood restaurants and independent creative spaces to buzzing nightlife and homegrown cultural experiences, South Africa’s capital has a personality that deserves more than a passing mention. Now, Time Out Pretoria is putting the city’s local character at the centre of the conversation.

The global city guide platform has officially launched its Pretoria edition, expanding its South African network alongside Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. The aim is to help residents and visitors discover what makes the Jacaranda City special, with recommendations shaped by people who understand its streets, communities and evolving cultural scene.

For Pretoria, this is an opportunity to tell its own story.

Beyond Johannesburg’s Shadow

Pretoria often finds itself competing for attention with Johannesburg, particularly when conversations turn to nightlife, entertainment and urban culture. But the capital has its own rhythm, and its appeal goes far beyond its proximity to South Africa’s economic hub.

Time Out Pretoria wants to uncover that identity through carefully curated recommendations covering food, nightlife, arts, culture, neighbourhood discoveries and local favourites. Rather than simply listing places to visit, the platform promises an experience-led approach that highlights what is genuinely worth exploring.

For young South Africans looking for their next weekend adventure, a new restaurant to try or a creative space to discover, the value lies in making local exploration easier.

The bigger opportunity is to position Pretoria as a destination in its own right, rather than a city people overlook while planning their next Gauteng outing.

Local Knowledge Makes the Difference

The platform’s approach centres on local expertise. Editors, city specialists and cultural connectors draw on their knowledge of the places they recommend, helping readers move beyond familiar attractions to discover the experiences shaping everyday city life.

That matters in a country where neighbourhoods can tell vastly different stories, sometimes within the same city. The best experiences are not always the most heavily advertised; some are found through word of mouth, independent businesses and the communities creating something new.

According to Aisha Mohamed, Managing Director at Time Out South Africa, Pretoria has a distinctive cultural identity and stories that deserve to be discovered. The ambition, she says, is not simply to tell people what is happening, but to inspire them to find experiences genuinely worth their time.

If successful, the guide could give greater visibility to local businesses, creative entrepreneurs and cultural spaces that help define the capital.

Jacaranda Season Gets a Local Soundtrack

The launch arrives during Pretoria’s iconic jacaranda season, when the city’s streets take on their familiar purple hue. To mark the occasion, Time Out Pretoria has partnered with Jacaranda FM to bring local recommendations to the station’s listeners.

The collaboration spans five radio shows, connecting audiences with places to visit and experiences to try. Features are scheduled for Breakfast With Martin Bester and The Workzone with Alex Jay on Thursdays, The Workzone with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp and The Drive with Rob & Roz on Fridays, and The Weekend Breakfast Boost with Lucky Du Plessis on Sundays.

By combining a digital city guide with radio programming, the partnership creates another route for residents to discover what is happening around them.

A Bigger Picture for South African City Culture

Time Out Pretoria joins a broader effort to celebrate the different identities shaping South African urban life. From Johannesburg’s street food culture to Cape Town’s internationally recognised destination appeal, local experiences are increasingly part of how cities introduce themselves to the world.

Pretoria has the opportunity to do the same, on its own terms.

The real measure of this launch will be whether it consistently uncovers new voices, supports discovery beyond the usual hotspots and reflects the diversity of the people who call the capital home.

For residents and visitors ready to see Pretoria differently, the next discovery could be closer than they think.
