South Africa’s running culture is about more than chasing personal bests. It is about communities finding their rhythm, ordinary people pushing beyond their limits and cities coming alive through shared experiences. This weekend, Mangaung joins that movement as the Absa RUN YOUR CITY SERIES brings its first-ever 10km race to the Free State.

The inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY MANGAUNG 10K will welcome 5,000 runners to the City of Roses, marking a significant milestone for a series that has grown from three host cities to six in just three years.

With nearly 50,000 South Africans having already participated in the series this year, the arrival of Mangaung signals something bigger than another race on the sporting calendar. It is an opportunity to put the Free State firmly in the national spotlight.

Mangaung Gets Its Moment on the National Stage

For a long time, major sporting events have helped shape how South Africans experience their cities. From packed stadiums to busy race routes, these gatherings bring people together while giving destinations an opportunity to show visitors what makes them special.

The Absa RUN YOUR CITY SERIES has built its identity around this intersection of sport, community and urban life. Its expansion into Mangaung extends that vision into the heart of the Free State, bringing a nationally recognised running event to a new audience.

According to Jabulile Nsibanyoni, Head of Sponsorships at Absa, the inaugural event represents an opportunity to showcase the region to a national audience, stimulate tourism and support local economic activity.

The potential impact extends beyond the runners themselves. Visitors travelling for the event can create opportunities for accommodation providers, restaurants, transport operators and other local businesses.

For Mangaung, the challenge is to turn race-day attention into a lasting invitation for people to explore the city and its surrounding attractions.

Five Thousand Runners, Thousands of Personal Stories

Not everyone arrives at a 10km race with the same goal.

For some, the finish line represents months of training and a personal-best attempt. For others, completing their first 10km is an achievement in itself. There are also participants who run or walk for causes close to their hearts, alongside supporters who contribute to the atmosphere from the sidelines.

That diversity is part of what makes mass-participation running so powerful. You do not need to be an elite athlete to take part in a sporting moment that belongs to an entire community.

Under the rallying call, “Take Your Story to the Streets. Take it to the Max,” the Mangaung event invites participants to bring their individual ambitions into a shared public experience.

It is a reminder that sport can create spaces where people from different backgrounds connect through a common challenge, whether they are competing for a podium finish or simply determined to keep moving.

From Three Cities to Six: Running Goes National

Mangaung joins Gqeberha, Cape Town, Durban, Tshwane and Johannesburg as a host city in the expanding series.

That growth reflects the potential of road running to reach people across different regions, rather than concentrating major participation events in a handful of established destinations.

For South Africa‘s running community, the addition of the Free State creates another opportunity to participate in a nationally recognised series. For local residents, it offers a chance to experience a major sporting event on their own streets.

The bigger question is what happens after the crowds leave. Can the excitement inspire more residents to take up running, encourage local clubs to grow and help establish Mangaung as a destination for future sporting events?

Those longer-term outcomes will determine how much the race contributes beyond its inaugural weekend.

More Than a Race for the City of Roses

The Absa RUN YOUR CITY MANGAUNG 10K arrives with an ambitious purpose: celebrate community, encourage active lifestyles and introduce more people to the Free State.

Its first edition will bring 5,000 runners together, but its significance could extend well beyond the numbers. A successful event can help strengthen local pride, introduce visitors to the region and remind residents that their city can be part of South Africa‘s biggest sporting conversations.

For Mangaung, this is a chance to tell a new story through movement, determination and collective energy.

The streets are ready. The runners are coming. Now, the City of Roses has an opportunity to make its first chapter count.
