TCL Is Taking Mini LED TVs to the Next Level

Technology moves quickly, but not every innovation changes how we experience entertainment at home. As televisions become bigger, smarter and increasingly central to how we consume content, picture quality is becoming an important part of the conversation.

Mini LED technology is one of the developments shaping that future, and TCL is positioning itself at the centre of its global growth.

According to Omdia figures cited in TCL Electronics‘ interim results, the company ranked No. 1 globally in Mini LED TV shipment volume during the first half of 2026, shipping 2.43 million units. That’s a 77.1% increase compared to the same period last year.

But beyond the impressive numbers, there’s a bigger question: what does this growth mean for consumers, and what should people actually look for when choosing their next television?

Mini LED Is Moving Beyond Premium Technology

There was a time when advanced display technologies were largely reserved for expensive flagship televisions. As adoption grows, however, Mini LED is becoming a more significant part of the global television market.

Omdia reported that Mini LED televisions accounted for 13% of global TV shipments in the second quarter of 2026.

TCL’s own growth reflects this momentum. The company reported a 31.1% share of global Mini LED TV shipments in 2025, with its shipment volume increasing by 118% year on year.

For consumers, this growing presence could mean more opportunities to experience advanced display technology across different product ranges.

However, wider availability also makes it important to understand what separates a genuinely impressive viewing experience from a television that simply carries an impressive specification sheet.

It’s About More Than Just Brightness

Mini LED uses smaller LEDs in a television’s backlighting system, allowing manufacturers to create more precise lighting control.

This matters because the quality of a picture isn’t determined by brightness alone. It’s also about how effectively a television controls light and darkness across different parts of the screen.

Three elements play an important role here: hardware local dimming, dimming zone count and Full Array Local Dimming.

Hardware local dimming allows different sections of the backlight to be controlled independently. Dimming zones determine how finely that control can be divided, while Full Array Local Dimming distributes these controllable zones behind the screen rather than relying on lighting from the edges.

Together, these technologies help improve contrast, manage bright highlights and produce deeper blacks.

Think about watching a night-time movie scene where a bright city skyline sits against a dark background. The television needs to illuminate the buildings without unnecessarily brightening the surrounding darkness.

That’s where effective light control makes a difference.

Why Category Leadership Needs to Mean More

TCL’s global shipment figures establish its position in the Mini LED market, but market leadership is about more than selling more televisions.

As the technology becomes increasingly mainstream, manufacturers will need to demonstrate what makes their implementation different and how those improvements translate into everyday viewing experiences.

For South African consumers, this is particularly relevant as home entertainment continues to evolve. From streaming films and series to watching live sport and gaming, television technology influences how people experience the content they love.

Understanding the technology behind the screen also gives consumers more confidence when comparing products and deciding where to invest their money.

The Future of Home Entertainment Is Taking Shape

TCL’s Mini LED growth signals how quickly the television industry is evolving. Its reported global leadership provides a strong commercial foundation, but the next challenge is turning that scale into meaningful innovation.

Ultimately, consumers don’t buy shipment rankings or engineering specifications. They buy better viewing experiences.

The brands that understand this distinction, communicate their technology clearly and continue improving what happens on screen will have the strongest opportunity to shape the next chapter of home entertainment.

For TCL, the opportunity is no longer simply to participate in the Mini LED movement. It’s to help define where it goes next.
