For many South African families, December is about getting out of the city, reconnecting with loved ones and finally taking that long-awaited trip to the coast. But with petrol prices climbing above R30 a litre, the annual holiday drive is becoming a bigger financial decision.
From Johannesburg to Durban, Polokwane or a family home in another province, the vehicle you choose can make a noticeable difference to your holiday budget. And with school holidays approaching, planning your transport could be just as important as booking accommodation.
Weelee, a South African pre-owned vehicle marketplace, is encouraging motorists to look beyond the purchase price and consider how well their vehicle suits their family’s travel needs.
The Real Cost of Getting Away This December
Holiday travel is about more than filling the boot and hitting the highway. Fuel, toll fees, luggage, passengers and unexpected expenses can quickly add up, particularly for households already balancing the cost of living.
According to figures supplied by Weelee, inland Petrol 95 reached R30.25 a litre in October 2026, following a R3.33 increase earlier that month.
The difference in fuel consumption becomes especially noticeable over longer distances. On a return journey between Johannesburg and Durban, covering approximately 1,140 kilometres, a vehicle consuming six litres per 100 kilometres could use around R2,070 in fuel. A vehicle consuming nine litres per 100 kilometres could cost approximately R3,100.
That is a potential saving of roughly R1,000 before toll fees and other travel expenses.
For families travelling to Polokwane, the same principle applies. Choosing a more fuel-efficient vehicle could leave more money available for holiday activities, meals and experiences once they arrive.
These estimates are based on the October inland petrol price supplied by Weelee. Actual costs depend on driving conditions, vehicle load and fuel prices.
One Car, More Family, Less Expense?
For extended families, travelling together can be another way to manage holiday costs.
Weelee estimates that two vehicles travelling from Johannesburg to Durban could cost approximately R4,480 in fuel and R1,390 in tolls, assuming both cars consume 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres.
A single seven-seater consuming nine litres per 100 kilometres could bring the combined fuel and toll cost down to approximately R3,795.
That is a potential saving of about R2,075, while keeping the family together for the journey.
Of course, the best option depends on how many people are travelling, how much luggage they carry and whether everyone can comfortably fit into one vehicle. Boot space, passenger comfort and safety should remain part of the decision.
Is Driving Still Cheaper Than Flying?
For families travelling in a group, driving can still offer a substantial cost advantage over flying.
Weelee’s comparison puts a family of four’s return flights to Durban at approximately R11,600, based on the cheapest fares cited in its research. Driving a vehicle consuming nine litres per 100 kilometres could cost approximately R3,800, including tolls.
That leaves a potential difference of around R7,800 before accounting for airport transfers, car hire and other destination expenses.
However, flight prices and driving costs vary, so travellers should compare the full cost of both options before making a decision.
Finding a Car That Fits Your Lifestyle
The bigger question is whether your everyday vehicle is equipped for your December plans.
A compact car might be ideal for commuting through Johannesburg traffic, but a family travelling with children, luggage and camping equipment may need more space. Those towing a trailer or caravan will also need to consider towing capacity and the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.
Speaking about the seasonal challenge, Weelee CEO Errol Levin says families often discover during December that their everyday vehicle is not necessarily suited to longer holiday journeys.
Weelee’s team assists buyers at its Centurion megastore, which operates seven days a week, and through its online platform. Buyers can compare seating capacity, boot space, fuel consumption and other practical features across a selection of pre-owned vehicles.
According to the company, vehicles undergo independent checks and come with DEKRA condition certificates, with verified service history available to buyers.
Plan Early, Travel Smarter
Changing vehicles is not the right answer for everyone. If your current car is reliable, economical and suitable for your family, keeping it may be the most sensible financial decision.
But if you are already considering an upgrade, December travel could provide a useful reason to reassess what you need from your next vehicle.
Weelee also allows private owners to list their cars for competing offers from verified dealers or sell directly to the company, with no obligation to accept an offer.
Ultimately, a better holiday does not have to mean spending more. Whether you are heading to the coast, visiting relatives up north or taking the family on a longer adventure, a little planning can help you make smarter transport decisions.
Because the goal is not simply to reach your destination. It is to arrive with your family comfortable, your journey manageable and enough money left to enjoy the holiday.
