Caffé Balducci Returns to Cape Town After 30 Years

Some restaurants serve food. Others become part of a city’s story. For three decades, Balducci was one of Cape Town’s most recognisable dining destinations, creating memories around birthday celebrations, first dates, family lunches and evenings that stretched long after the plates were cleared.

Now, the iconic name is back. Introducing Caffé Balducci, a contemporary reinvention of the much-loved Italian dining institution, bringing its signature hospitality to Piazza St John in Sea Point.

Opening its doors on Sunday, 13 September 2026, the restaurant marks a new chapter for a brand that first welcomed diners in September 1996. Its return is about more than nostalgia. It is about giving a new generation of Cape Town diners a place to gather, connect and experience the city’s evolving food culture.

From Waterfront Favourite to Sea Point Social Hub

Balducci’s previous home at the V&A Waterfront was a fixture in Cape Town’s dining landscape before the COVID-19 pandemic forced its closure. Its absence left a gap for loyal customers who associated the restaurant with more than its menu.

Owner Ian Halfon says the new incarnation preserves the brand’s familiar spirit while introducing a contemporary experience for the next generation.

That balance sits at the heart of Caffé Balducci. Classic European café glamour meets Cape Town’s relaxed coastal energy, with alfresco terraces, stylish interiors, music and tables extending into the Piazza St John precinct.

Located at 395 Main Road, Sea Point, the restaurant is also a short walk from the Sea Point Promenade and Atlantic Ocean. It is positioned for neighbourhood regulars, city explorers and anyone looking to turn an ordinary coffee stop into a longer social occasion.

One Table, Multiple Food Cultures

The menu is built around variety, offering something for different appetites and occasions throughout the day.

Mornings begin with quality espresso, ceremonial-grade matcha, smoothies and breakfast favourites. Diners can choose anything from granola and power bowls to Brioche French Toast, Eggs Benedict and the traditional Balducci Breakfast.

As the day unfolds, Italian classics take centre stage. Antipasti platters encourage sharing, while artisanal Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizzas use imported Italian Caputo flour. The pasta selection includes favourites such as Arrabbiata and Butternut Ravioli, alongside options like Ostrich Lasagne and Signature Mac & Cheese.

The offering stretches well beyond Italian cuisine. An extensive Asian Noodles & Sushi Bar serves wok-tossed noodles, tempura, teriyaki, poke bowls and an assortment of sushi made with fresh, never-frozen fish.

Seafood lovers can explore sustainably sourced Cape linefish, kingklip, queen prawns and Mozambican shellfish, while meat dishes include steaks matured by sister restaurant Belthazar.

For dessert, the selection moves between European pastries and South African comfort food, with Pastéis de Nata, Biscoff Tiramisu, Chocolate Fondant and Malva Pudding among the options.

Coffee in the Morning, Cocktails After Dark

Caffé Balducci is designed to move with the rhythm of the day rather than serve just one occasion.

Operating daily from 08:30 until late, the restaurant combines breakfast meetings, casual lunches, sundowners and evening dining under one roof. Two outdoor terraces add to the open-air atmosphere, while Fashion TV screens and electronic music bring a contemporary edge to the interiors.

Future DJ nights are also planned, signalling ambitions to make the venue part of Sea Point’s social scene as well as its dining circuit.

Its wine programme is another major attraction. The wine bar offers 60 premium wines by the glass through a specialised nitrogen-infused dispensing system, with selections served in Riedel glasses. Sommeliers are available to help diners navigate the list, which includes wines from the Cape, Champagne and Prosecco.

Cocktails, craft beers, ciders, whiskies and other spirits round out the drinks offering.

A Familiar Name With a New Generation in Mind

For Cape Town, Caffé Balducci represents the return of a familiar hospitality name in a city where restaurants often become landmarks through the experiences people share inside them.

Its challenge will be to honour three decades of memories while building new traditions among younger diners and Sea Point’s growing neighbourhood community.

The Slick Restaurant Group loyalty programme adds another incentive, offering members 10% of their bill credited to their loyalty card for redemption at participating restaurants, including Belthazar and Gibson’s at the V&A Waterfront. Members also receive a R200 birthday voucher, and existing loyalty points remain valid.

Caffé Balducci is located at Piazza St John, 395 Main Road, Sea Point, Cape Town. The restaurant operates daily from 08:30 until late, and bookings are advised.
