The Clock Is Ticking for SA’s Next Wine Stars
South Africa’s wine industry is constantly evolving, and behind every bottle that reaches the table is a winemaker making hundreds of creative and technical decisions.
Now, the people behind those decisions have just 10 days left to put their work in the spotlight.
Entries for the 2026 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year and Young Winemaker of the Year awards close on Monday, 31 August 2026. The competition recognises the makers behind exceptional wines rather than simply celebrating the bottles themselves.
That distinction matters.
Celebrating the People Behind the Bottle
Wine can be marketed through labels, estates and tasting notes, but the real story begins much earlier – in vineyards, cellars, laboratories and the instincts of the people crafting each vintage.
The Diners Club awards have built their reputation around recognising that human expertise.
The 46th Winemaker of the Year competition turns its attention to White Blends, while the 26th Young Winemaker of the Year category focuses on Red Wine.
The awards are open to South African wine industry professionals at no cost, creating an opportunity for established and emerging talent to compete on the quality of their work.

Where Tradition Meets the Next Generation
Perhaps the most interesting part of the awards is the spotlight placed on young talent.
The Young Winemaker of the Year award was created to encourage winemakers under 30 to sharpen their skills, develop their individual voices and contribute to the international reputation of South African wine.
For a younger generation entering an industry steeped in tradition, that recognition can mean more than a trophy.
It can be validation that experimentation, fresh thinking and a distinctive creative identity have a place alongside decades of winemaking knowledge.
The Prize Goes Beyond the Trophy
The stakes are also significant.
The 2026 Winemaker of the Year will receive R75,000, while the Young Winemaker of the Year receives R45,000. Both winners will also receive a return air ticket to a wine-producing region anywhere in the world, subject to the presenting sponsor’s terms and conditions.
That international opportunity could be particularly valuable for South African winemakers looking to exchange ideas, discover new techniques and bring global influences back home.
The finalists will be invited to the black-tie awards gala on 21 November 2026, where the winners will be revealed.

South Africa’s Wine Future Is Being Written Now
The Diners Club awards are ultimately about more than finding a winning wine. They are about recognising the people shaping where South African wine goes next.
With only 10 days remaining, winemakers have a final opportunity to enter their work and potentially put their names alongside some of the country’s recognised wine talent.
Entries and competition information are available through Diners Club’s official 2026 Winemaker of the Year page.
For an industry that increasingly competes on a global stage, celebrating the creativity behind the bottle could be just as important as celebrating what’s inside it.
