Bongeziwe Mabandla Embraces the Journey of Becoming on Ndingubani
Award-winning South African singer-songwriter Bongeziwe Mabandla has released his deeply personal new album, Ndingubani, an emotionally rich and introspective project that explores identity, resilience, heartbreak, healing, and hope.
Recognised as one of the most influential voices in contemporary African music, Mabandla continues to transform his personal experiences into songs that resonate with audiences around the world. With Ndingubani—which translates to “Who Am I?”—he delivers his most honest and vulnerable work yet, inviting listeners into a deeply reflective journey of self-discovery.

Rather than offering a simple answer to its title, the album embraces the ongoing process of becoming, highlighting the beauty found in growth, uncertainty, and personal transformation.
Written during periods of reflection and change, Ndingubani revisits significant chapters of Mabandla’s life. The album explores his experiences of leaving home, searching for belonging, confronting mental health challenges, navigating betrayal, balancing ambition, and ultimately learning to embrace himself more fully.

Drawing inspiration from his upbringing in South Africa’s Eastern Cape alongside the emotional complexities of adulthood, the 18-track project paints a moving portrait of survival, resilience, and hope.
“A lot of these songs were born from difficult moments. Some came from memories of growing up in the Eastern Cape, others from experiences of illness, loneliness, pressure, love, addiction, and the emotional cost of chasing dreams. Even though many of the themes are heavy, the album is ultimately my own testament to hope and resilience.”
says Mabandla
Musically, Ndingubani expands Mabandla’s distinctive blend of folk-inspired songwriting with contemporary African soundscapes. Influenced by theatre, spiritual music, and storytelling traditions, every track creates its own emotional world while contributing to the album’s larger narrative.
Songs such as Walila demonstrate Mabandla’s flair for theatrical storytelling and subtle humour, while Ndikhulule (Depression) and Ukuyeka confront trauma, vulnerability, and healing with remarkable honesty. Tracks like Zama and A.M.L reflect on the relentless pursuit of purpose, capturing both the sacrifices and uncertainty that often accompany personal growth.

At the emotional centre of the album is Libambe Ligatshoni, a powerful meditation on perseverance that became a spiritual anchor throughout the project. The song reinforces one of the album’s strongest messages: holding onto hope even when the destination remains uncertain.
The album also features heartfelt tributes to the people who have shaped Mabandla’s life. Yalwa honours the unconditional love and sacrifices of mothers, while Mganwam celebrates friendship, loyalty, and meaningful human connection.

Adding an international dimension to the project, acclaimed Cameroonian artist Blick Bassy joins Mabandla on Ndinje, a moving collaboration that reflects on self-acceptance and embracing every part of one’s identity.
Across all 18 tracks, Ndingubani showcases Bongeziwe Mabandla at his most courageous. The album allows listeners to experience moments of pain, doubt, joy, healing, and triumph while reminding them that growth is rarely straightforward.

Rather than presenting easy answers, Ndingubani celebrates the complexity of life’s journey and the strength found in embracing uncertainty. It is a powerful statement about becoming, choosing hope, and remaining authentic even when the path ahead is unclear.
With Ndingubani, Bongeziwe Mabandla delivers another defining chapter in his career, further cementing his place as one of Africa’s most compelling musical storytellers while continuing to push the boundaries of contemporary African music through honesty, vulnerability, and profound human connection.
Ndingubani is available now on all major streaming platforms.
