Portia Baloyi on Being Married at First Sight, Her Ex-Husband & Life After the Show
Married at First Sight South Africa Season 2 has wrapped — and what a season it was! Now streaming on Showmax, the hit reality experiment had Mzansi talking week after week with its raw emotion, bold conversations, and unpredictable drama. From discussions about polygamy and intimacy to clashes rooted in faith and family, this season pushed boundaries like never before.
Among the brave participants were four couples: Palesa Mphaki and Tshepo Miya, Makoto Phumodi and Nkuleleko Mahlangu, Themba Khosa and Nelisa Ntabeni, and Portia Baloyi and Bongani Luvalo. Of them, only Nelisa and Themba remain married, continuing to build their love story beyond the cameras.
In the emotional reunion special hosted by Relebogile Mabotja, viewers got closure — and new revelations. For Portia Baloyi, the journey didn’t end with the final episode. She opened up about her marriage, her divorce, and her personal evolution since the show.
A Rollercoaster of Emotion
Reflecting on her experience, Portia admits it was both rewarding and challenging.
“It’s been a rollercoaster, to be honest. You’re marrying a complete stranger and then figuring each other out in front of the whole country. There’ve been amazing moments but also real challenges. It’s stretched me emotionally and spiritually, but I’ve grown so much.”
she says
The reality of marrying someone sight unseen — and navigating that relationship on national television — brought out lessons about communication, patience, and emotional maturity.
“I’ve learned that I can communicate better when I give myself space to breathe first, instead of reacting. So yeah, a lot of personal growth.”

Facing the Reunion
Heading into the reunion, Portia had “mixed emotions.”
“I was nervous but curious to see everyone again. We’ve all had time to reflect, and without the cameras around 24/7, there’s more honesty. I’m proud of myself for showing up fully and being true to who I am.”
On Her Marriage with Bongani
When it comes to where things stand between her and Bongani, Portia remains open yet realistic.
“We’re still figuring things out, to be honest. It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve had real conversations since filming ended. We’re not where we were on decision day, that’s for sure.”
Watching herself back on TV, however, was an eye-opening experience.
“Yo, that part was wild! I cringed a few times, not gonna lie. But it also gave me perspective and helped me understand how I come across to others. It’s been humbling.”
Moving Forward After Divorce
Since confirming her divorce, Portia says her focus has shifted toward healing and growth.
“At this point, both of us are focused on healing and moving forward individually. What the future holds, only God knows. My priority is peace, growth, and rebuilding myself from a place of strength and grace.”
A New Chapter Begins
With the show behind her, Portia is embracing a new season of life.
“I’m stepping into a new chapter, one centred on purpose, faith, and self-discovery. I want to focus on my work, my passions, and the things that truly feed my soul. I’ve been through so much, and now it’s about rebuilding, refocusing, and realigning with the woman I’m becoming.”
She closes with gratitude and accountability.
“I take full accountability for my part in everything that’s happened. I’ve learned, I’ve grown, and I hold no bitterness. My truth is that I loved deeply, I tried, and now I’m choosing peace over pain.”
