Top 3 Finish for Kershnie Govender in Fiery Taste Master SA Semi-Final
The heat was on in this week’s semi-final episode of The Taste Master SA, filmed at the breathtaking Vuur restaurant, where flames, pressure, and passion ignited an unforgettable culinary showdown. With only three contestants left standing, the challenge was clear: transform a classic South African braai into a gourmet three-course masterpiece — all over open flames and without the luxury of stoves.
KwaZulu-Natal’s own Kershnie Govender, a self-employed caterer known for her bold, soulful cooking, brought her A-game to the table. Though she didn’t make it through to the grand finale, her Top 3 finish marked a moment of triumph, capping off a season where she captivated audiences with her authenticity, resilience, and deep-rooted love of food.
From Home Cook to National Stage
Kershnie’s culinary journey is rooted in the nurturing warmth of her grandmother’s kitchen. Throughout the competition, she stayed true to her philosophy: simple yet bold food that tells a story. She consistently fused fresh ingredients with fearless flavours, elevating humble dishes into heartfelt masterpieces.
“This has been nothing short of a dream come true. Making it to the Top 3 has given me the confidence, exposure, and belief that I have something unique to offer.”
Reflecting on her Top 3 achievement, Kershnie shared:
Fire as a Teacher
The semi-final wasn’t just a test of taste, but technique — and adaptability. With no stoves in sight, Kershnie had to rethink everything she knew, working over open fire under the intense mentorship of renowned Chef Shaun Scrooby.
“It was out of my comfort zone. I had to embrace the unpredictability of fire and adapt my approach completely. But I stayed rooted in the flavours I love and gave the braai my own Indian spice twist.”
The key lesson? Mastering the fire itself — not just as a heat source, but as an ingredient.
Pressure, Pride, and Possibility
The intensity of the semi-final was a far cry from the kitchens she’s used to — but the pressure became a crucible of growth. From fast-paced cook-offs to mastering gourmet presentation outdoors, Kershnie emerged more confident, capable, and creatively daring.
“Cooking over fire, with time limits and scrutiny, taught me so much about resilience. It was a challenge, but it made me appreciate what it takes to deliver quality food under pressure.”
A Glimpse of What’s Next
While her Taste Master SA journey has reached its end, Kershnie’s culinary dreams are only just beginning. She plans to grow her catering business and is more committed than ever to opening her own restaurant.
“The experience has lit a new fire in me. I’m ready to create a space that celebrates my heritage and brings people together around honest, soulful food.”
From her grandmother’s spice-laden stews to high-stakes semi-finals under the African sun, Kershnie Govender has cooked her way into the hearts of South Africans. As Lucky and Chevonne prepare for the finale, Kershnie walks away proud — not just with a Top 3 spot, but with a vision that’s stronger than ever.
