South African documentary filmmakers have a powerful new platform to elevate their craft. The Mayibuye Doc Lab 2025, a pioneering development programme hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal-based Ehozini Retreat, is officially calling for submissions for its inaugural intake. The initiative, backed by the National Film and Video Foundation’s Presidential Economic Stimulus Programme, is dedicated to supporting entry and intermediate-level filmmakers working on creative documentary projects.
Taking place between June and July 2025, the Mayibuye Doc Lab offers a unique blend of online workshops and immersive residencies in the picturesque rural setting of Ehozini. The Lab will select eight projects, bringing together directors, producers, and impact producers for intensive, hands-on mentorship and training.
“The Mayibuye Doc Lab is a hands-on programme to support South African creative documentaries in development. Ehozini offers not only professional development but a safe and inspiring environment where filmmakers can focus on their craft.”
says Tiny Mungwe, Programme Director and respected documentary filmmaker
Programme Highlights:
- Story Development & Visual Approach Workshop: Helping directors shape compelling narratives with strong visual identities.
- Production, Financing & Co-Production Workshop: Equipping producers with practical tools to secure funding and navigate international partnerships.
- Impact & Distribution Workshop: Strategies for maximizing social impact and ensuring broader reach.
- Pitching-Readiness Workshop: Sharpening presentation skills to attract funders, broadcasters, and distributors.
Participants will also gain exclusive access to international markets and co-production platforms, opening up global pathways for their projects.
“This programme’s primary objective is to strengthen South Africa’s creative documentary landscape and connect local talent to global networks. It’s also about creating sustainable employment opportunities in our local film industry.”
