Raz & Afla Reimagine Classics with Windowlicker & Going Back To My Roots

Afro-Electronic Innovation Meets Iconic Covers

Wah Wah 45s proudly presents a stunning double release from Afro-electronic duo Raz & Afla, reimagining two classic tracks—Going Back To My Roots and Windowlicker. Following the success of their critically acclaimed album Echoes of Resistance, the pair return with their unique sonic interpretations, pushing boundaries while paying homage to music history.

Going Back To My Roots – Honoring a Legacy

Originally written and recorded by Lamont Dozier in 1977, Going Back To My Roots found mainstream success through Richie Havens (1980) and Odyssey (1981). Raz & Afla’s rendition, releasing 18 April 2025, embraces the song’s deep message of connection to heritage and identity. Inspired by the song’s lineage—spanning Hugh Masekela and Orlando Julius—they infuse it with their signature percussive rhythms and dancefloor sensibilities.

“We love this song. The lyrics resonate with us, talking about the meaning of connection to a land and its people… You can’t choose your heritage, and we like to celebrate that.”

– Raz & Afla

Windowlicker – A Bold Reinterpretation

Diving into unexpected territory, Raz & Afla take on Aphex Twin’s twisted electronic masterpiece Windowlicker. The track, also set for 18 April 2025, transforms into an Afro-house odyssey with hypnotic percussion, funky guitar riffs, eerie synths, and haunting vocal textures.

“We wanted to go to a different place from our influences for this one… When we told people we would cover this tune, everyone said ‘but how?!’ In Raz & Afla style.”

– Raz

A Visual & Sonic Tribute

Not only do these covers pay homage musically, but they also feature stunning visuals from graphic designer Michael Sallit. The artwork for Going Back To My Roots references Odyssey’s 1981 version, while Windowlicker playfully nods to Chris Cunningham’s iconic Aphex Twin visuals.

Both tracks have already received high praise from BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, Craig Charles, and Nick Grimshaw, solidifying Raz & Afla’s status as pioneers in Afro-electronic music. With a blend of history, rhythm, and reinvention, this release promises to ignite dancefloors worldwide.
