Review: Not My Type – A Refreshing Take on Love and Compatibility
Urban Lifestyle had the chance to watch Not My Type, the latest Showmax original film, and while it follows the familiar beats of a South African romantic drama, there’s something about it that feels different—yet slightly incomplete. Perhaps I need to watch more romance films to pinpoint what was missing.

Visually, the movie is well-shot and expertly edited, a testament to the high production quality we’ve come to expect from Showmax originals. But what truly sets Not My Type apart is its approach to love. Unlike many South African romance films that center around weddings—because let’s be honest, wedding stories sell—this film takes a refreshing detour. Instead of focusing on the “happily ever after” moment, Not My Type explores the journey of meeting someone, choosing them, and deciding they’re the one you’re ready to settle down with.

One of the strongest themes in the film is the idea that love isn’t always about finding the “perfect” person who ticks all your boxes—it’s about being open to the unexpected. Sometimes, the person who doesn’t initially seem like your type is the one who ends up being just right.

The standout performance in the film comes from Lorraine Moropa, who more than exceeds expectations in her role as Letsatsi. She brings depth, authenticity, and grace to the character, making her journey relatable and emotionally engaging.

Overall, Not My Type delivers a heartfelt, thought-provoking story about love, faith, and the choices we make in relationships. While it may not completely redefine the romantic drama genre, it offers a refreshing perspective on what it means to find “the one.” If you’re a fan of love stories with depth, it’s definitely worth the watch.
