In just nine episodes of Youngins Season 2, Kadia Banyini has emerged as a standout performer, stealing scenes as Mazambane, Olifantsfontein High’s mischievous troublemaker. With his unapologetically bold personality, Mazambane keeps his peers—and viewers—on edge, leaving a lasting impression on South Africa’s teen drama fans.
Recently crowned Best South African Streaming Series at the inaugural Behind the Scenes Awards, Youngins has cemented its place as a cultural phenomenon. Season 2 debuted to record-breaking first-day views on Showmax, following the platform’s relaunch in partnership with Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky. The hashtag #YounginsShowmaxS2 trended at #1 on X on its launch day, while the trailer amassed over a million views within 24 hours.
At the heart of this buzz is 19-year-old rising star Kadia Banyini, whose portrayal of Mazambane has captivated audiences. In an interview with Xabiso Ngqabe, Kadia opened up about his journey, his character, and what it means to be part of a show that resonates so deeply with South African youth.
From Dobsonville to the Spotlight
For Kadia, booking the role of Mazambane was a pivotal moment.
“After my part in the Mzansi Magic movie Indoda Must, booking Youngins felt like a breakthrough. Just last year, I was studying through Star Quality Creative Arts, and by the grace of God, I landed this role right before finishing my course.”

Meet Mazambane
Mazambane is no ordinary teenager.
“He’s a kasi boy and troublemaker. He loves girls but never seems to win them over. A class clown and relentless bully, Mazambane keeps everyone on their toes.”
Kadia explained
While Kadia identifies with some aspects of his character, he’s quick to draw a line.
“There’s a lot of me in Mazambane—except for the part where he’s failing at school! We’re both outspoken, confident, and maybe a little arrogant, but that’s part of the charm.”
Kadia explained
On-Screen Magic
Watching himself on screen for the first time was a surreal experience for Kadia.
“I remember thinking about how nervous I was during filming, but seeing it all come together felt amazing. My family is proud, and my friends are excited to see me doing what I love.”
Mazambane’s Growth in Season 2
Season 1 offered viewers a glimpse of Mazambane, but Season 2 dives deeper.
“This season truly brings him to life. He’s still the goofy, carefree guy, but you get to see his layers. Beneath the clowning, he knows when to get serious and draw boundaries.”

Life on and off Set
Reuniting with his co-stars felt like coming home for Kadia.
“Every day on set was a joy because of the amazing people I worked with. Even off set, we’re like family. We hang out all the time.”
Being part of Youngins has also been life-changing.
“The show has introduced my craft to people who didn’t know me before. It’s a huge platform to tell stories that resonate with young South Africans.”
What to Expect in Season 2
According to Kadia, the season offers more than just entertainment.
“Credit to the writers for tackling real issues young people face. What happens in Youngins reflects what’s happening in our schools, making it relatable for viewers.”
With Kadia’s compelling performance as Mazambane, Youngins continues to push boundaries and connect with audiences on a profound level.
