A dramatic pre-gate scratching of the race favourite Hawaam opened the door for 2018 winner Do It Again to become the fifth horse in the 123 years of the Vodacom Durban July to win back-to-back when he snuck home at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.

Trained by Justin Snaith and ridden by Richard Fourie, the gelding was always going to be up there with the contenders and when Hawaam was scratched following an injury on entrance to the starting gate the defending champion slipped into the favourite slot to bag the R4.25 million.

Another pre-race contender Rainbow Bridge came home in second place, outsider Twist of Fate bagged third place and it was Eyes Wide Open who came home in fourth place.

Snaith finished with two horses in the top five when S’Mmanga Khumalo ridden Miyabi Gold came across the line in fifth place.

Revellers, punters and fashionistas were entertained throughout the day at Greyville with fashion taking centre stage for most of the mornings action at the Lakes Lifestyle Village.

It was a day to remember for Makhosazane Ntshangase as she walked away with two fashion awards during the day.

She was the designer selected out of hundreds of initial applicants to win the 2019 Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award presented by Durban Fashion Fair award for her baby zebra inspired design.

Ntshangase beat Siphiwo Treasure Buthelezi, who finished second, and Tanyaradzwa Tirivanhu for the top spot in the coveted fashion prize.

Ntshangase wasn’t done there and showed that she is an up and coming star when she also walked away with the award for the Classic Racewear for Women crown. It was an incredible day for the student for the Lindiwe Kuzwayo Academy of Fashion on Saturday.

Her design beat hundreds of on the day entrants with the judging starting at 09:30 in the morning.

In the other raceday fashion competitions, the amount of entrants was substantial as the designers showcased their take on the theme ‘Stars of Africa’.

In the Classic Racewear for Women, Nompumalelo finished behind Ntshangase in second while Brenda Wearing was third.

The Classic Racewear for Men prize went to Motho Ngema with Senzo finishing second and M-Shade collecting the first of his two podium finishes.

Lindo Mathebulo created the outfit that was judged to be the best in the Most Striking Couple category. She beat Pregasen Govender and M-Shade who finished second and third respectively.

Finally in the Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator category it was Zandile Masondo, who dominated for the fourth time, winning first and second prize for her creations while Nana took home the third prize.
