What’s more terrifying than being a newcomer comedian? Being a newcomer comedian with five minutes on stage to impress some of SA’s biggest names in comedy. Welcome to the annual Savanna Newcomer Showcase.
This platform was created by longstanding comedy partners Savanna Premium Cider and the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards to give these emerging comedians their time to shine, as well as giving comedy heavyweights, media and potential booking agents a chance to see the next big thing in comedy.
Being a newcomer can be daunting: many haven’t performed live on a stage in front of hundreds of people, they often don’t know the ins and outs of the industry and preparing for the Showcase can leave them shell-shocked. With this insight in mind Savanna has created the ultimate comedy team “training programme” to push our budding newcomers over the finish line.
And who better to coach this new crop of funny people than those who’ve played the game themselves: enter the previous recipients of the Savanna Newcomer Award! Meet our coaches Deep Fried Man, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Dillan Oliphant, Thabiso Mhlongo, Ebenhaezer Dibakwane and Yaaseen Barnes.
These brave and fearless men have conquered the Savanna Newcomer Showcase stage and walked away with a Waldo to show for it. Teaming up with Savanna, the coaches will rally a squad of newcomers and take them under their proverbial wings to ready them for all sorts of challenges the industry can throw at them: from how to read the crowd to how to book a corporate gig.
The 24 registered comedians selected to perform at the Showcase have been randomly placed into a team with each of the coaches. The coaches will provide support, mentorship and guidance throughout the campaign period leading up to the showcase on 20 May.
Like any good sporting match, spectators can follow the action live across the Savanna and Savanna CCA social platforms, to keep up to date with each team’s training, progress and scores!
This year’s Showcase will be hosted by Skhumba Hlophe, the 2017 winner of the Savanna Comic of the Year Award and the winner of the Flying Solo Award for two years running.
The Savanna Newcomer Showcase takes place on Sunday 20 May 2018 at The Soweto Theatre, Johannesburg. It has sold out for three years in a row, so hurry and book your seats.
