Sunlight Turns 135 Years Into Community Action

From Household Name to Community Platform

For 135 years, Sunlight Green Bar has been part of the everyday South African household. But its latest milestone isn’t just about looking back.

With Raised by the Bar, Sunlight is turning its anniversary into a nationwide conversation about the people who have helped shape the communities where the brand has lived, worked and grown.

The initiative launched in Durban on Friday, with the campaign set to travel through Mthatha, Johannesburg, Mbombela and Polokwane. At each stop, the focus shifts from brand history to the people making history in their own communities.

Why Start at a Taxi Rank?

The choice of Durban’s taxi rank as the launch setting feels particularly significant.

Taxi ranks are often reduced to places people pass through. In reality, they are miniature economies and social ecosystems. They are where traders build businesses, commuters exchange stories, performers find audiences and communities create livelihoods.

For many young South Africans navigating the realities of entrepreneurship, informal trading and the gig economy, these spaces represent something bigger: opportunity built from the ground up.

That makes the Raised by the Bar concept more interesting than a conventional anniversary campaign. It is placing community commerce at the centre of the story.

Backing the People Behind the Hustle

As the Raised by the Bar truck travels across the country, selected local entrepreneurs will receive practical support aimed at making everyday trading easier.

The campaign will also create opportunities for local performers to showcase their talent, while communities are encouraged to contribute stories, memories and traditions.

That emphasis on participation matters.

South African culture isn’t something that simply exists in museums or heritage sites. It lives in taxi ranks, spaza shops, salons, street markets, music, food, neighbourhood businesses and the people who keep these spaces moving.

Five Cities, Five Chapters

The journey through Durban, Mthatha, Johannesburg, Mbombela and Polokwane positions Raised by the Bar as a kind of travelling community archive.

Each destination brings its own character, entrepreneurial energy and cultural identity. Rather than presenting one version of South African life, the campaign has an opportunity to show how different communities contribute to the country’s shared story.

As Sunlight Marketing Manager Noni Makhanya puts it, brands don’t create legacies alone — communities do.

That idea is perhaps the most important part of the campaign.

After 135 years, the question isn’t simply how long Sunlight has been around. It’s what a legacy means when the people who carried it forward are finally placed at the centre of the conversation.

Raised by the Bar is an attempt to answer that question — one community, entrepreneur and story at a time.
