Food lovers in Johannesburg have another reason to visit MATH Restaurant this winter as the acclaimed Midrand destination welcomes Chef Eric Mphela back for an exclusive five-day culinary collaboration. Running from 15–19 July, the limited-time pop-up showcases a specially curated menu inspired by Chef Eric’s signature bold Asian flavours, offering guests a memorable dining experience centred around sharing, comfort and creativity.
Following the success of his previous appearance during the MATH Wine Club, Chef Eric returns with an entirely new seasonal menu designed to celebrate the joy of gathering around exceptional food. The collaboration reinforces MATH Restaurant’s commitment to showcasing emerging culinary talent while delivering unique experiences that go beyond traditional dining.
Dinner service will be available from Wednesday to Friday, with the menu expanding to both lunch and dinner over the weekend, giving more guests the opportunity to experience the exclusive offering.

A Winter Menu Inspired by Bold Asian Flavours
Chef Eric’s winter menu combines refined technique with comforting dishes that embrace modern Asian influences while highlighting fresh, seasonal ingredients.
Guests can begin their culinary journey with starters including heirloom tomatoes paired with amasi and rooibos, crispy jalapeño calamari served with green goddess dressing and pickled vegetables, or a beautifully prepared beef tartare presented on a tostada with crispy garlic.
The main course selection continues the flavour-packed experience with standout dishes such as a fragrant Massaman chicken curry, prime rib on the bone accompanied by roasted bone marrow and seven-spice potatoes, gochujang-glazed short rib served alongside broccolini and salsa verde, and Chef Eric’s indulgent interpretation of a chilli cheeseburger featuring double smashed patties, pickled jalapeños and house burger sauce.
Each dish reflects Chef Eric’s passion for creating food that encourages conversation and connection.
Chef Eric Mphela Brings People Together Through Food
Although still emerging on South Africa‘s culinary scene, Chef Eric Mphela has rapidly earned recognition for his immersive dining experiences and thoughtful approach to hospitality.
Known for balancing bold flavours with refined cooking techniques, his kitchen takeovers have attracted a loyal following of diners seeking memorable culinary experiences. Rather than simply preparing meals, Chef Eric creates spaces where food becomes a catalyst for storytelling, curiosity and community.
Speaking about the collaboration, Chef Eric said the menu reflects his philosophy of cooking.
“This menu is a reflection of how I love to cook, bold flavours, comforting dishes and food that invites people to slow down and share a table. Returning to MATH feels incredibly special because we’ve built something together that goes beyond a meal. It’s about creating moments that people remember long after the last plate leaves the table.”
Celebrating Creativity at MATH Restaurant
For MATH Restaurant founder Puleng Mathabatha, welcoming Chef Eric back was a natural decision after the overwhelming response to their previous partnership.
The restaurant continues to position itself as a destination where creativity, culture and exceptional hospitality meet by regularly opening its kitchen to talented visiting chefs.
Mathabatha believes collaborations like these create memorable experiences that resonate with guests long after their visit.
“Opening our restaurant to Chef Eric once again was an easy decision. Our previous collaboration during the MATH Wine Club was incredibly well received by our guests, and it reminded us how powerful these creative partnerships can be. Eric brings a warmth and energy to the kitchen that perfectly aligns with everything MATH stands for, and we’re excited to welcome guests back for another unforgettable experience.”
