Award-winning singer, actress, and storyteller Zolani Mahola has officially entered a bold new chapter in her career, marked by fresh music, a major global partnership, and an exciting evolution of her artistic identity.
Widely celebrated as one of Africa’s most influential voices, Mahola is embracing a new creative era that blends powerful storytelling, cultural pride, and sonic experimentation while staying true to the authenticity and emotional depth that have defined her journey.

The first release under her new partnership with Virgin Music Group, titled “XhosaNostra,” was released on 4 June 2026 and serves as a striking reintroduction to Mahola as both an artist and visionary. Rooted deeply in her Xhosa heritage, the song explores new musical territory through a bold and textured Gqom sound that celebrates identity, freedom, and innovation.
The track features one of the final recordings by the late Bravo Le Roux and includes production from London-based Grammy-nominated producer Hannah V, whose distinctive touch adds depth and energy to the release.
“This season feels like a return to myself in many ways. The music is bold, rooted, playful, emotional, and deeply African. I’m excited to partner with a team that understands both the vision and the scale of what we’re building.”
Speaking about this exciting new phase, Mahola shared:
Mahola first gained international acclaim as the lead vocalist of Freshlyground, spending 17 years touring the world and contributing to the global anthem Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) alongside Shakira. Throughout her illustrious career, she has collaborated with renowned artists including Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Msaki, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Yo-Yo Ma.
Beyond music, Mahola has built an impressive legacy across theatre, film, and advocacy. Her achievements include performances at Carnegie Hall, a Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Best Actress, and a South African Music Award for Best Produced Album for her acclaimed solo project Thetha Mama.

“XhosaNostra” offers audiences the first glimpse into her forthcoming album, People Power, a genre-defying project that promises to blend African identity, global influences, and compelling storytelling into a powerful artistic statement.
With a major international partnership in place and new music already making waves, Zolani Mahola’s next era has officially begun—one defined by fearless creativity, cultural celebration, and a vision that continues to resonate far beyond South Africa’s borders.
