Johannesburg-based architecture practice Hubo Studio has earned international recognition after being named a finalist in three categories at the prestigious Architizer A+Awards, one of the world’s most influential honours in architecture and design.

The South African studio has been shortlisted among just five firms globally in the Best Small Firm (6–15 employees) category, placing Hubo Studio alongside some of the most impactful emerging architectural practices in the world.

Adding to the achievement, the studio’s flagship project, the Redhill Early Learning Centre, has also been recognised internationally. The innovative educational facility has been selected as a finalist in both the Educational Interiors category and the Kindergarten category of the Architizer A+Awards — effectively ranking it among the top five projects globally in both divisions.
The annual Architizer A+Awards celebrate excellence in architecture across a broad spectrum of categories, recognising exceptional projects, firms and designers from around the world. Finalists are chosen by an international jury made up of leading architects, designers and cultural figures.

Located in Johannesburg, the Redhill Early Learning Centre has gained acclaim for its forward-thinking approach to educational design. Built around principles of child-centred learning, the project reimagines the traditional school environment as a “mini city” where interconnected spaces encourage curiosity, independence and collaboration among young learners.

The design features a central piazza, vertical ateliers and seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a vibrant and dynamic environment aimed at supporting early childhood development.
According to Asher Marcus, the recognition carries significant meaning for both the practice and the broader South African creative industry.
“This recognition is incredibly meaningful for us. It reflects not only our work, but a broader belief that architecture can shape the way children learn, think and grow. To be representing South Africa on this platform is something we are deeply proud of,”.
