Ep2. Screen Grab

Five Suspects Rock Die oord

The peaceful atmosphere of Kalfiebaai is shattered in the opening episode of Die oord, kykNET’s chilling new crime drama that transforms a nostalgic caravan park getaway into a terrifying murder mystery.

What begins as a relaxing coastal holiday quickly spirals into fear and suspicion when the body of a teenage boy washes up on the beach. The victim’s head is covered with a plastic bag, his body marked with disturbing wounds, and a cryptic Bible verse left behind — a signature that immediately terrifies criminologist Martie Pretorius.

Martie, played by Jana Kruger, instantly recognises the gruesome pattern. She has seen this killer’s work before, raising fears that the infamous “Prediker” may have returned after 15 years.

As panic spreads through the caravan park, five major suspects emerge from the shadows.

Paul Pretorius

Played by Liam Bosman, Paul Pretorius is already carrying emotional baggage before the murder rocks the campsite. Tension within the family is boiling over, and his suspicious behaviour only deepens concerns. After spending the night out, Paul wakes up on the beach the same morning the body is discovered. Whether he is hiding a dark secret or simply protecting himself remains unclear.

Brandi Jacobs

Melissa de Vries stars as detective Brandi Jacobs, a sharp investigator with experience from the city. She quickly points fingers at gang activity linked to Mitchell’s Plain, suggesting criminal elements have infiltrated Kalfiebaai. But her confidence in this theory raises questions of its own. Is she following evidence — or steering the investigation away from something closer to home?

Lukas du Preez

The respected reverend Lukas du Preez, portrayed by Jacques Bessenger, becomes a natural suspect after the chilling Bible verse is discovered with the body. Living quietly in Kalfiebaai with his daughter Mia, Lukas appears trustworthy and calm. Yet the possibility that the “Prediker” killer has resurfaced casts a dark shadow over the man of God.

Witblits

Played by Carel Nel, Witblits is the overlooked homeless man who roams the beaches and campsite unnoticed. While others dismiss him, he quietly observes everything happening around Kalfiebaai. His knowledge of the town’s hidden secrets and nighttime movements could make him either a valuable witness or something far more dangerous.

The Cobras

Detective Brandi believes the murder may be connected to The Cobras, a feared gang allegedly operating beyond Mitchell’s Plain and moving into the small coastal town. If true, the killing could be more than personal revenge — it might be a brutal warning linked to organised crime. The possibility of gang violence adds another sinister layer to the mystery gripping the community.

By the end of the premiere episode, no one in the caravan park feels safe. The once comforting holiday setting becomes a pressure cooker of paranoia, suspicion, and hidden motives.

Inspired by creator Christiaan Olwagen’s memories of childhood caravan holidays, Die oord masterfully blends nostalgia with psychological tension, creating a uniquely South African whodunit filled with secrets lurking behind every tent flap and caravan door.

With ten episodes set against one isolated beachside location, viewers are left wondering whether the real Prediker has truly returned — or if someone is using the killer’s terrifying legacy as cover for a new wave of murders.

One thing is certain: in Die oord, everyone has something to hide.

Die oord airs Tuesdays at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144) and is also available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
