INSIDE AIRPORT LOST AND FOUND TAKES OFF ON NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC THIS FEBRUARY
Go behind the scenes of America’s busiest airports
From priceless watches and sacred garments to prosthetic eyeballs and even taxidermied animals, the items travellers leave behind at airports can be stranger — and more revealing — than anyone might imagine. This February, National Geographic opens the doors to this hidden world with the premiere of Inside Airport Lost and Found, a fascinating new series exploring what really happens after the boarding gate closes and the luggage carousel stops spinning.
Premiering on Thursday, 26 February at 18:50 (CAT), the series airs on National Geographic (DStv Channel 181, StarTimes 220), with new episodes weekly until 30 April. Viewers are taken inside America’s busiest airports, where dedicated lost-and-found teams work tirelessly to reunite travellers with their missing belongings — or prepare them for an unexpected second life.
From misplaced to rediscovered
Each episode follows the journey of lost items from discovery to resolution. Cameras venture deep into airport lost-and-found offices, where staff operate as part detective and part problem-solver. Their daily tasks range from handling luxury Rolex watches and wedding rings to safeguarding vital medication and large sums of cash.
With thousands of misplaced items passing through their hands annually, the stakes are often much higher than they appear. Every object carries a personal story — sometimes sentimental, sometimes life-changing.
The series also tracks certain unclaimed belongings beyond airport walls to the renowned Unclaimed Baggage Center in Alabama. There, items are catalogued, resold, or auctioned, giving viewers insight into the astonishing volume of property left behind each year — and the surprising journeys these possessions take.

More than lost luggage
Inside Airport Lost and Found is as much about people as it is about property. The show highlights the dedication, empathy and persistence of airport teams determined to return meaningful items to their rightful owners.
Among the unforgettable discoveries featured in the series are a live dog, a soldier’s uniform, vintage Air Jordans and culturally significant First Nations regalia — each with its own powerful backstory waiting to unfold.
Beyond the intrigue, the series offers a timely reminder: many lost items are held only for a limited period before being donated or sold. Recovery is often possible — if action is taken quickly.

At its heart, this is a story about responsibility, human connection and second chances. One traveller’s lost suitcase can ultimately become another person’s found treasure.
