Earth’s Essence Liquors has unveiled South Africa’s first full range of naturally preserved wine, beer, and cider—each crafted using the antioxidant power of proudly South African botanicals. This innovative breakthrough replaces artificial preservatives with rooibos and honeybush extracts, offering a cleaner approach to beverage preservation while celebrating indigenous flora and local ingenuity.
At its core, Earth’s Essence represents a movement toward more mindful, naturally guided consumption within the beverage industry. Its focus is not on altering traditional flavours, but on preserving them using plant-based antioxidant methods backed by years of research.
A World-First in Natural Beverage Preservation
Earth’s Essence stands out as the only brand to apply a natural antioxidant preservation method across three categories—wine, beer, and cider. This patented process substitutes sulphites and chemical preservatives with minute quantities of rooibos and honeybush antioxidants. Importantly, these drinks are not rooibos-flavoured; the antioxidants are functional ingredients, not flavouring agents.

The full Earth’s Essence range is now available at 25 selected Checkers LiquorShop stores in Cape Town, as well as through Checkers Sixty60 in participating delivery areas. A national rollout is planned for next year following the success of the Cape Town pilot.

THE EARTH’S ESSENCE STORY
The Earth’s Essence journey began in 2010 on a family wine farm in Stellenbosch. After a long day in the cellar, Trevor Strydom was offered a cup of rooibos tea by his daughter—a simple moment that sparked a transformative idea: could rooibos antioxidants be used to preserve wine naturally?
That question led to 14 years of research, collaboration with universities and government partners, and development of a patented natural preservation technique now applied across wine, beer, and cider. This innovation has made Earth’s Essence a world-first.
Trevor credits industry partners, researchers, and Checkers senior management for helping bring the concept to market. Their collective support enabled the idea to grow into a fully fledged range now available at selected stores.
