Where Is Friends of Amstel? The Party Goes On

South Africans know what it means when a great event becomes part of the social calendar. It is no longer just about attending a party. It becomes something people look forward to, plan around and talk about long after the music stops.

That is exactly what Friends of Amstel managed to create. But with questions surrounding its next edition, fans are beginning to wonder whether one of the country’s recognisable premium music and lifestyle experiences is taking a different direction.

And with the Amstel Golden Fan Club increasingly appearing in the brand’s event calendar, one question deserves an answer: Has the Golden Fan Club replaced Friends of Amstel, or are the two experiences meant to coexist?

The Friends of Amstel Experience Is Missed

Friends of Amstel built its identity around a simple but powerful promise: everyone is a VIP.

It was more than a music festival. It brought together South African music, premium production, lifestyle experiences and an atmosphere that made ordinary ticket holders feel like they were part of something special.

The November 2025 Soweto edition was particularly significant. For the first time, the experience brought its premium music and lifestyle concept to the township, with a line-up featuring some of South Africa‘s biggest musical names. The event also reportedly sold out in less than 30 minutes, demonstrating the appetite for the experience.

For many fans, that is what made Friends of Amstel stand out. It wasn’t simply another weekend event competing for attention. It offered an experience people wanted to be associated with.

So naturally, the absence of another announced edition has left room for speculation.

Enter the Amstel Golden Fan Club

While questions about Friends of Amstel continue, Amstel is keeping its connection with South African sports and entertainment audiences alive through the Golden Fan Club.

The next scheduled experience, is taking place on 31 October 2026 at Moses Mabhida Stadium’s People’s Park in Durban.

The occasion is the Soweto Derby viewing experience, bringing supporters together to watch Orlando Pirates take on Kaizer Chiefs.

It is a different kind of gathering, built around football rivalry, fan culture and the shared excitement that comes with one of South Africa‘s biggest sporting fixtures.

The Golden Fan Club could represent an opportunity for Amstel to connect with consumers beyond the traditional music festival environment. But that doesn’t automatically mean it has replaced Friends of Amstel.

The two concepts serve different entertainment interests, and there is room for both to exist within the same brand ecosystem.

What Happened to Friends of Amstel?

This is where Amstel owes its loyal audience some clarity.

Has Friends of Amstel been paused while the brand explores other experiences? Is the Golden Fan Club part of a broader entertainment strategy? Or is Friends of Amstel preparing for a return in 2027?

At this stage, there is no confirmed public announcement establishing that the Golden Fan Club has replaced Friends of Amstel or explaining the latter’s future.

That distinction matters. Fans shouldn’t have to rely on rumours or social media speculation to understand whether an event they have supported is returning.

South Africa Still Has Room for Both

South Africa‘s entertainment scene thrives on experiences that bring people together. From amapiano festivals and live performances to football viewing parties, audiences want more than just an event. They want memories, connection and something worth talking about afterwards.

Friends of Amstel established a particular place in that landscape. The Golden Fan Club offers another way to bring people together.

Our question to Amstel is simple: Are we saying goodbye to Friends of Amstel, or should fans keep a space open for its return?

Because sometimes, a new experience doesn’t need to replace an old favourite.

And if Friends of Amstel returns in 2027, there will undoubtedly be an audience ready to welcome it back.
