South Africa’s AI Boom Has a Digital Divide Problem
South Africa is talking about AI like the future has already arrived. But for millions of people, the more immediate challenge is getting access to the basic technology needed to participate in that future.
The country ranks 46th out of 147 economies in Microsoft’s Global AI Diffusion Report for Q1 2026, while generative AI usage has reached 23.1% of the working-age population. Those numbers sound impressive.
But scratch beneath the surface and another story emerges.
Being Connected Isn’t Being Equipped
South Africa has made significant progress in connectivity, with ICASA reporting that 82.1% of households had internet access from some location in 2026.
The catch? For many people, that connection lives almost entirely on a smartphone.
A smartphone can keep you connected, entertained and informed. But try building a CV, completing a detailed online application, working on spreadsheets or learning professional software on a small screen. Suddenly, being “online” feels very different from actually being digitally empowered.
Only 16% of South African adults own a computer, while the latest available ITU data puts household computer ownership at 26%.
That gap matters.
The Laptop Price Problem
For many households, owning a computer isn’t simply a matter of wanting one. It is an affordability issue.
With entry-level computers costing upwards of R6 000 and the median monthly wage standing at R5 417, a laptop can represent more than an entire month’s earnings for someone on or below that income level.
That makes digital literacy a class issue as much as a technology issue.
And as AI increasingly influences recruitment, education, entrepreneurship and workplace productivity, people without foundational computer skills risk being pushed even further away from opportunity.
The Divide Starts at School
The problem doesn’t suddenly appear when someone enters the job market.
It starts much earlier.
South Africa‘s 2025 Education Facility Management System data indicates that just under half of public schools had a computer centre, leaving more than 11 000 schools without one.
That means thousands of young people can reach tertiary education or the workplace without having had consistent access to a computer.

As Barbara Cawcutt, general manager at ICB, argues, tertiary institutions have an important role to play in closing that gap by providing foundational digital skills.
And foundational really does mean foundational: knowing how to navigate a computer, manage files, use a browser and work with basic software.
Before someone can master AI, they need the confidence to use the tools that make AI accessible.
The AI Conversation Needs to Become More Inclusive
Perhaps the biggest warning sign is awareness itself.
A national HSRC survey found that 73% of South Africans have little familiarity with the term “AI”.
That should force a rethink of how we talk about the country’s digital future.
AI shouldn’t only be a conversation happening in corporate boardrooms, universities and tech hubs. It needs to become part of everyday South African life — in classrooms, townships, rural communities, small businesses and homes.
The real opportunity isn’t simply getting more people to use AI.
It’s giving more people the foundation to understand, question and benefit from it.
Because South Africa cannot build an inclusive AI economy if millions are still waiting for their first proper computer experience.
