Vimbs Mavimbs’ Late Bloomer Arrives
After years of building an impressive reputation as one of South Africa‘s most respected jazz musicians, bassist, composer, producer, bandleader, and musical director Vimbs Mavimbs has officially released his long-awaited debut album, Late Bloomer. Available on all major digital streaming platforms since 12 June 2026, the nine-track project marks a defining moment in his career and showcases a mature artistic voice shaped by nearly two decades of musical experience.
More than just a debut, Late Bloomer is a deeply personal reflection on Mavimbs’ unconventional journey into professional music. Choosing to pursue music later than many of his peers, the acclaimed bassist embraces the idea that success doesn’t always follow a traditional timeline. The album’s title symbolises growth, transformation, and the belief that some of life’s greatest achievements come through patience and perseverance.
“I am incredibly excited to finally share this labour of love with the world. Late Bloomer represents years of listening, learning, dreaming, and becoming. It is a reflection of my journey, but also a tribute to everyone who has ever felt that their time would come later than expected,”.
says Mavimbs
Musically, Late Bloomer blends South Africa‘s rich jazz heritage with contemporary and experimental influences. The album offers a fresh yet respectful take on modern jazz, balancing tradition with innovation while delivering emotionally rich compositions rooted in memory, community, and artistic freedom.
Listeners will recognise previously released favourites Love Drive and Family Gathering, while new standout tracks include Ngelosi, featuring celebrated jazz vocalist and scholar Spha Mdlalose, and Chapman’s Peak, a composition that has remained close to Mavimbs’ heart for many years.

The project also brings together an outstanding collection of South African jazz talent. Pianist DiTeboho Kobedi delivers expressive performances across the album, while acclaimed musicians Robin Fassie (trumpet), Sisonke Xonti (saxophone), and Keenan Ahrends (guitar) contribute to the richly layered arrangements. Additional performances from Tlale Makhene (percussion), Thami Mahlangu (saxophone), Lungile Kunene (drums), and Zarcia Zacheus (vocals) further elevate the project into a celebration of collaboration and musical excellence.
Reflecting on the album’s creation, Mavimbs says the project represents far more than a personal achievement.
“This album would not exist without the support of the many people who have walked this journey with me. I am deeply grateful to my family, mentors, collaborators, and the incredible musicians who helped bring these compositions to life. More than a personal milestone, Late Bloomer is a celebration of community, patience, and the belief that the richest stories are often shaped over time.”
With Late Bloomer, Vimbs Mavimbs delivers an inspiring statement that artistic growth cannot be rushed. The album celebrates resilience, lived experience, and the confidence that comes from allowing creativity to mature naturally. It is a powerful introduction to an artist whose voice has been years in the making and one that promises to leave a lasting mark on South African jazz.
Late Bloomer is now available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, YouTube Music, and other major digital streaming platforms. Fans can also follow @vimbs_mavimbs on social media for the latest news, performances, and upcoming releases.
