The Person Who Put You in the Room

South Africa’s greatest leadership challenge may not be a shortage of talent, but a shortage of intentional mentorship. According to Sakhile Mkwanazi, too many capable people remain stuck, not because they lack intelligence or qualifications, but because no one with influence has chosen to genuinely invest in them.

In his latest insight piece, Mkwanazi argues that while advice is abundant, meaningful access is rare. Real career transformation, he says, often begins when someone with influence decides to open doors, share networks and place another person in opportunities they may not yet fully believe they deserve.

The coach explains that most successful leaders can point to one or two individuals who fundamentally altered the direction of their lives. These were not institutions or formal programmes, but people who deliberately backed them, challenged them and gave them exposure to environments they otherwise may never have entered.

Mkwanazi believes that many talented South Africans plateau because they lack a roadmap for navigating unfamiliar professional spaces. Despite having qualifications and technical competence, many still struggle with confidence, executive presence and a sense of belonging in high-level environments.

He notes that formal education alone cannot bridge this gap. Degrees may provide knowledge, but they do not teach the subtle social and leadership skills developed through proximity to experienced professionals. According to him, these lessons are transferred through relationships, observation and intentional guidance over time.

Drawing from his own journey, Mkwanazi reflects on growing up in Soweto, moving through under-resourced township schools before later entering better-equipped educational environments. He recalls battling low confidence and feeling unprepared for professional spaces, despite his abilities and qualifications.

The turning point came when an influential individual early in his career decided to invest in him personally. That person shared networks, introduced him to rooms he had not yet earned access to on paper and held him to standards that pushed him to grow. Mkwanazi says the relationship changed the trajectory of his life and career in lasting ways.

Now a coach at Grow Coaching, Mkwanazi believes intentional mentorship is not merely an act of generosity but a strategic necessity for South Africa’s future. He argues that when leaders bring capable people into their worlds, they expand trust, strengthen collaboration and unlock broader economic potential.

He also stresses the importance of building relationships across race, class and professional divides. In the leadership and networking spaces he facilitates, Mkwanazi often returns to the belief that trust develops through familiarity and meaningful engagement across difference.

Rather than endless conversations about transformation, he believes South Africa needs practical action through deliberate relationship-building and mentorship that creates real opportunities for others.

Mkwanazi warns that the long-term cost of failing to invest in emerging talent is significant. Businesses fail to scale, future leaders remain undiscovered and valuable potential is lost. For him, the solution begins with leaders asking themselves whether they are intentionally creating opportunities for others and whether their investment truly makes a meaningful impact.

An Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellow, Mkwanazi holds a Masters in Entrepreneurship from Wits Business School and has coached businesses across technology, retail, hospitality and energy sectors. Before joining Grow Coaching, he managed a business development portfolio worth R50 million within the construction industry.
