M-Net at 40: The Channel That Grew Up With SA

There are some television theme tunes that instantly transport South Africans back in time. A familiar melody, a memorable character or the anticipation of a Sunday-night movie can bring back memories of family gatherings, childhood routines and the shows everyone discussed the next morning.

On 26 October 2026, M-Net celebrates 40 years on South African screens. But its story is bigger than a television channel reaching a milestone. It is a story about how entertainment shapes collective memory, creates household names and reflects the changing lives of the people watching.

From the days of Open Time to today’s premium dramas and reality television, M-Net has spent four decades helping define what South Africans watch, remember and talk about.

Four Decades of Making Television History

When M-Net launched on 26 October 1986, it became South Africa‘s first private subscription television service and the first of its kind on the African continent. Its beginnings were modest: 12 hours of broadcasting a day and a core team of just 25 employees.

What followed was a transformation that mirrored the country’s evolving relationship with entertainment.

The channel helped introduce audiences to a new way of watching television, from scheduled viewing and exclusive programming to major international productions. For viewers who grew up with it, certain traditions became part of everyday life.

Sunday nights meant the anticipation of a movie at 20:00, with the familiar Carte Blanche theme tune preceding the evening’s entertainment. These weren’t simply slots on a schedule. They were shared experiences that connected households across the country.

The Shows That Made South African Stars

M-Net’s influence is also written into the careers of some of South Africa‘s most recognisable entertainers.

Names such as Shaleen Surtie-Richards, Ashley Hayden, Trevor Noah, Brümilda van Rensburg, Heinz Winckler, Nico Panagio, Somizi Mhlongo, Ferdi Rabie and Thuso Mbedu are connected to different eras of local television, but they share a link to the channel’s entertainment legacy.

In 1988, Carte Blanche established itself as a defining force in investigative journalism, with Derek Watts and Ruda Landman becoming respected figures in the country’s media landscape.

Then came Egoli: Place of Gold in 1992, which made history as South Africa‘s first daily soap opera. Its legacy helped pave the way for productions such as Binnelanders, keeping local storytelling at the centre of television culture.

Reality television also found a powerful home on the channel. Big Brother South Africa sparked conversations when it debuted in 2001, followed by Idols South Africa in 2002. Across 19 seasons, Idols helped showcase aspiring performers and contributed to the country’s wider music conversation.

These programmes did more than fill airtime. They created opportunities, launched careers and gave audiences characters and stories they could make their own.

From Appointment Viewing to a Changing TV Landscape

M-Net‘s 40-year journey also reflects how dramatically entertainment consumption has changed. Audiences now navigate streaming platforms, on-demand libraries and social media conversations that can turn a scene into a viral moment within hours.

The channel’s leadership says M-Net is now available to more DStv subscribers following its introduction on the new Movies & Series bouquet. For a brand built around premium entertainment, reaching more viewers will be important as competition for attention continues to intensify.

Waldimar Pelser, Director of Premium Channels at MultiChoice, describes the channel’s evolution from a small operation into a major broadcasting brand as remarkable. Former continuity presenter Ashley Hayden and actress Brümilda van Rensburg have also celebrated the people whose work helped build its legacy.

The challenge ahead is clear: preserve the magic of familiar television traditions while remaining relevant to audiences whose viewing habits are constantly evolving.

What’s Next for M-Net at 40?

The anniversary arrives with a fresh line-up of local and international entertainment.

South African thriller Invisible, based on Deon Meyer‘s Blood Safari, is currently airing on Wednesdays at 20:00. A 70-minute documentary special, A Conversation with Kgalema Motlanthe, premieres on 28 October at 21:00.

Reality fans can look forward to My Kitchen Rules returning on 11 November, followed by Survivor USA on 15 December. International highlights include War, starring Dominic West and Sienna Miller; The Five Star Weekend, led by Jennifer Garner; and the second season of Dexter: Resurrection.

Further returns include Mobland, Marshals, Lioness and Tulsa King. M-Net has also announced a new co-production with Quizzical Pictures, the award-winning South African company behind Reyka and White Lies, with more details still to come.

That local partnership is particularly worth watching. South African productions need opportunities to reach audiences alongside internationally recognised titles, and co-productions can help strengthen the country’s creative ecosystem.

Forty Years of Memories, With More Stories to Tell

M-Net‘s anniversary is a reminder that television’s impact extends beyond the screen. It lives in the performers who became household names, the journalists who challenged the powerful, the local productions that changed the industry and the families who made viewing a shared ritual.

The next generation may discover its favourite shows through very different platforms, but the desire for compelling stories remains unchanged.

For a channel turning 40, the real milestone isn’t simply how long it has been broadcasting. It’s how many memories it has helped create — and whether the next chapter can inspire a new generation of South African viewers.

To mark the occasion, Carte Blanche aired a special M-Net 40th-anniversary trip down memory lane on Sunday, 25 October, at 19:00 on DStv channel 101.
