Tyson Ignites Durban School with Raise The Bar: NextGen Energy

Durban recently turned into a vibrant celebration of youth culture, creativity, and self-expression as Sunlight’s Raise The Bar: NextGen campaign made a powerful stop at Newlands East Secondary School.

The activation transformed the school into a live amapiano and rap stage where learners stepped into the spotlight through music, dance, and performance. More than just spectators, students actively entered the Raise The Bar: NextGen competition on-site, creating an atmosphere filled with energy, confidence, and raw talent.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was an electrifying performance by Durban-born rapper and Sunlight ambassador Tyson. His performance not only entertained the crowd but encouraged learners to embrace their individuality and showcase their creative abilities without fear.

The Raise The Bar: NextGen initiative continues to gain momentum across South Africa by giving young people a platform to express themselves through the arts. The nationwide competition offers one winning school per province the chance to receive significant funding to invest back into their school communities.

Speaking about his own musical journey, Tyson shared how creativity and experimentation inspired him from an early age.

“I always had a love for the concept of science in how they mixed different elements together to make something new and poetry really. Then I leaned more into wanting to say something witty and next thing you know I’m learning how to produce songs on virtual DJ with a headset with a mic attachment.”

The rapper explained that seeing the reception to his music eventually motivated him to pursue music professionally full-time.

For Tyson, becoming a Sunlight ambassador carries both personal and professional significance.

“I think it’s cool that I get to work with a brand that has been everywhere in my childhood. Even better now because I’m helping amplify their story with a message that speaks to my journey too.”

Returning to Durban for the school activation made the experience even more meaningful for the artist.

“Durban is my hometown but I never get many chances to do shows there. The energy is so live there and even better when it’s for an audience of young people who get this music.”

Tyson was particularly inspired by seeing shy learners transform into confident performers once they stepped onto the stage.

The campaign also highlights the importance of schools as safe spaces for creativity and personal growth. Tyson believes these environments play a major role in shaping young people’s identities and future careers.

“We need more platforms that encourage the youth’s interests that help them express who they are. It’s the building blocks for a career in the arts or even just a hobby you can share with friends.”

When asked what advice he would give to aspiring young creatives struggling with confidence, Tyson encouraged learners to keep creating and sharing their work despite social media pressures.

“Post more ignoring the like count because 10 likes is 10 people and that’s a lot of people supporting you in a room in real life.”

The broader Raise The Bar: NextGen campaign continues nationwide, with massive opportunities for schools and individuals alike. In total, R1.35 million is up for grabs, including prizes for schools and standout individual entries.

Tyson hopes learners walked away from the activation inspired to embrace who they truly are.

“To be themselves unapologetically. It takes a few examples sometimes to push you to be more brave.”

One memorable moment for the rapper came from a learner who initially claimed he only wanted Sunlight merchandise but later revealed he secretly made music himself after finding confidence during the activation.

Looking ahead, Tyson says fans can expect more music as he continues working on his upcoming sophomore project titled AMEHLO, a body of work he describes as authentically South African and deeply personal.

As the Raise The Bar: NextGen campaign travels across the country, it continues proving that schools can become powerful stages where creativity, talent, and confidence come alive.
