Decorex 2026 Embraces “The Soft Life”

Decorex Reveals the Theme We All Needed: The Soft Life

As the world slows down in search of meaning and balance, Decorex Africa has unveiled a theme that speaks directly to the moment: The Soft Life. For 2026, the continent’s premier design platform is embracing a more intentional, human-centred approach to living — one that prioritises comfort, calm, and connection.

Long known for reflecting how we live and where we’re heading, Decorex Africa’s latest theme marks a natural evolution. The Soft Life is not about escapism, but rather a conscious shift away from relentless productivity and toward spaces that restore and nurture.

In an age defined by constant acceleration and excess, this new direction highlights the quiet power of design. It recognises that the environments we create influence not just how we live, but how we feel and relate to one another.

A Theme Rooted in Experience and Dialogue

The theme was first introduced in February at an intimate Women in Design gathering in Cape Town. Hosted at the Anatomy Design showroom, the event brought together leading voices in the industry to explore the role of comfort, care, and the female perspective in shaping modern spaces.

This early conversation set the tone for what The Soft Life represents: a design philosophy grounded in empathy, inclusivity, and lived experience.

From Innovation to Intention

In recent years, Decorex Africa has explored major influences such as sustainability, technology, and cultural shifts. With The Soft Life, the focus turns inward — toward the human experience within those environments.

Garreth van Niekerk, Co-Executive Creative Director of Decorex, describes it as a natural progression: a response to what people now seek in the future — homes and spaces that nourish, support, and restore.

At the heart of the theme lies the concept of soft power: design’s ability to shape perception, foster meaningful connections, and create lasting opportunities through collaboration and cultural exchange.

A Global Milestone for African Design

In line with this vision, Decorex Africa has announced a landmark international partnership with Maison&Objet Paris. South Africa has been named the Spotlight Country for the Rising Talent programme at the fair’s September 2026 edition — a significant step forward for the local design industry.

Portfolio Director Sian Cullingworth notes that this milestone represents years of collective effort, opening doors for African designers to gain global visibility and build sustainable growth.

Designing for Comfort, Beauty and Balance

At its core, The Soft Life celebrates design that is both aesthetically beautiful and deeply considered. Comfort is no longer viewed as indulgence, but as intention — a vital element of modern living.

The 2026 design palette reflects this philosophy, blending earthy tones like clay, sage, deep plum, and warm coral with unexpected bursts of neon inspired by nature — electric limes, magentas, and ultraviolets. The result is a visual language that feels both calming and expressive.

More Than an Exhibition

Decorex 2026 promises to be more than just a showcase of design. It is set to be an immersive experience that invites visitors to slow down, engage deeply, and rediscover the beauty of living well.

As van Niekerk puts it, comfort has evolved into something far greater than luxury — it has become cultural, shaping the way we design, live, and connect.

In a world that rarely pauses, Decorex Africa’s The Soft Life is a timely reminder that sometimes, the most powerful statement is made softly.
