Yanga Chief – Lord Faku: The Life Of A Dyan | Album Review (2025)
It’s September 2025, and after finally giving Yanga Chief’s Lord Faku: The Life Of A Dyan a full listen, one thing is clear — this album isn’t just another rap release; it’s a reflection, a revelation, and a reminder of why Yanga remains one of South Africa’s most gifted lyricists.
Released independently on 21 February 2025, the 17-track project marked a defining chapter for Yanga Ntshakaza, who continues to blur the line between hip-hop artistry and cultural storytelling. Upon release, Lord Faku: The Life Of A Dyan debuted at #1 on the SA Spotify Daily Chart, racking up 875,400 plays, while the standout single “What If (Mngani)” hit 1 million views on YouTube and surpassed 1 million Spotify streams in just 19 days.
A Sonic Journey Through Life, Faith, and Reflection
While “What If?” has dominated the spotlight, diving deeper into the album reveals a treasure trove of sonic and lyrical brilliance. Tracks like “Faithful (feat. Ricky Tyler & Nay The Bae)”, “Ask God About Me (feat. Nue Sam)”, and “Drakensburg (feat. Khuli Chana & HENNYBELIT)” showcase Yanga’s ability to weave introspection, spirituality, and township nostalgia into his bars.
Each song feels intentional — a chapter in a larger story about identity, faith, and resilience. Yanga balances his signature flow with melodic and soulful hooks, creating a sound that is both modern and timeless.
The production throughout is world-class, layered with rich samples, heavy basslines, and emotional instrumentals that perfectly complement Yanga’s narrative depth. From the smooth transitions to the heartfelt choruses, it’s clear that the producers on this project understood Yanga’s vision — and elevated it.
Standout Tracks
- “What If? (Mngani)” — The reflective anthem of the album, this track is a lyrical gem. Yanga questions fate, purpose, and legacy, dropping bar after bar of cultural and historical introspection.
- “Set Me Free (feat. AKA)” — A bittersweet collaboration with the late AKA, this song feels deeply personal. Although short, its emotional weight makes it one of the most memorable moments on the album.
- “Faithful (feat. Ricky Tyler & Nay The Bae)” — Both featured artists shine here. Nay The Bae’s delivery feels intimate and raw, while Ricky Tyler brings smooth, heartfelt energy that lingers long after the beat fades.
- “Ask God About Me (feat. Nue Sam)” — A confident declaration of faith and perseverance. Yanga’s verses remind us of his growth and grounding in spirituality.
- “Drakensburg (feat. Khuli Chana & HENNYBELIT)” — An energetic, culturally infused anthem that merges traditional sounds with modern hip-hop flair — pure artistry.
Other tracks like “eTVini” and “Peaceful Place (feat. 25K)” further enrich the listening experience, offering a diverse palette of sound and emotion.
A Master of His Craft
Lyrically, Yanga Chief is in rare form. His verses are dense with meaning, cultural reference, and introspection. He doesn’t just rap — he paints pictures with words, connecting generations of South African experience. Whether he’s questioning divine purpose on “What If?” or seeking liberation on “Set Me Free,” every line carries weight.
Final Thoughts
Listening to Lord Faku: The Life Of A Dyan in 2025 feels like discovering a modern classic. It’s the kind of album that grows with every listen — layered, soulful, and full of heart. While “What If?” remains the breakout hit, the entire project deserves to be celebrated as a cohesive body of work that cements Yanga Chief as one of South Africa’s most important hip-hop storytellers.
If you haven’t yet given this album the time it deserves — now’s the moment.
