Penquin Uses AI to Bring Children’s Stories to Life This World Literacy Day

In a groundbreaking move that blends technology with social purpose, Penquin, a leading brand and communication agency, has launched the Penquin Kids AI Book Collaboration. The initiative, revealed in celebration of World Literacy Day, leverages generative AI to create original children’s books while directly addressing South Africa’s pressing literacy challenges.

More than a creative experiment, this project represents a long-term commitment to community upliftment. Under the newly formed Penquin Kids sub-brand, the agency has pledged to print and distribute these books to children and parents through socio-economic development organisations, aligning the initiative with its broader CSI strategy.

“Penquin Kids represents our long-term commitment to children’s education, creativity, and well-being. Launching it with such a meaningful project feels right. We’re showing that agencies like ours can use our skills, tools, and passion to uplift communities in practical ways.”

says Ryan Nofal, Co-Managing Director at Penquin

A Bold Experiment in AI Storytelling

The Penquin Kids AI Book Collaboration is a first-of-its-kind project that brought together employees from across the agency—creatives, copywriters, finance clerks, HR professionals, and account executives—to co-create ten original children’s books.

Designed with dual goals in mind, the project aimed to build internal AI literacy while demonstrating how technology can enhance, not replace, human creativity. Marking Penquin’s 25th anniversary, the initiative reflects its core values of Bold, Creative, Purposeful, Innovative, and Accountable.

“Ten teams. Ten original children’s books. One bold experiment in AI-powered storytelling. That’s the essence of this project. We wanted to explore how AI could be a tool for creativity, not a replacement, and, at the same time, make a real difference in children’s lives.”

explains Veronica Moleele, CEO at Penquin

The Human-in-the-Loop Process

Each cross-functional team was assigned one of Penquin’s values as the inspiration for their story. The process was carefully structured to integrate AI while preserving human oversight:

  • Conceptualisation: Teams mapped story ideas and arcs.
  • AI Integration: ChatGPT was used to build narratives and develop characters.
  • Visuals & Audio: DALL·E generated illustrations, while ElevenLabs provided optional audio versions.
  • Human Refinement: Crucially, staff edited all AI-generated content, ensuring at least 30% refinement for cultural authenticity, humour, and South African context.

This hybrid approach produced books that feel authentic, creative, and community-driven.

Captain Chaos Leads the Way

The winning story, Captain Chaos, was created by Team Accountable—Wesley Lewis, Gabriel Mullens, Theresa Burger, and Unathi Mashiya. The book follows Bontle Nkosi, a spirited Grade 4 learner navigating the ups and downs of leadership as class captain. Through humour and heart, the story shows young readers that true leadership lies in accountability, empathy, and teamwork.

Captain Chaos will now be printed and distributed to communities in need, with Penquin actively seeking sponsorships to scale its impact.

“This is my favourite kind of project, where creativity, innovation, and purpose collide. We’re not just using AI for novelty’s sake. We’re harnessing it to create real tools that can support parents, teachers, and kids, while also building confidence and teamwork within our agency.”

adds Mandy Davis, Co-Managing Director at Penquin

A Brand with Purpose

The launch of Penquin Kids positions the agency as a leader in blending creativity, technology, and social impact. By using AI responsibly, Penquin demonstrates how innovation can directly contribute to solving societal challenges like literacy.

This initiative is not only a milestone in AI-driven creativity but also a bold step in redefining corporate social responsibility. Penquin’s work shows how local projects can resonate globally, setting a precedent for agencies worldwide.
