Reboost Turns Tembisa Football Into Business Fuel

For many township entrepreneurs, a busy sports tournament is more than entertainment. It can be a chance to put stock on the table, meet new customers and turn a crowd into an income opportunity.

That was the thinking behind Reboost Energy Drink’s partnership with the inaugural Lerato Lamola Winter Games in Tembisa, where the brand used the month-long football tournament to put local vendors at the centre of its activation.

Rather than simply showing up with branding and giveaways, Reboost created a commercial opportunity for entrepreneurs trading around the games.

Turning Matchday Energy Into Income

Participating vendors were able to purchase Reboost Energy Drink stock at a reduced price and sell directly to supporters attending the tournament.

It is a straightforward model, but its potential impact is bigger than the transaction itself.

For township businesses operating in highly competitive environments, access to affordable stock can make the difference between simply trading and actually generating a worthwhile margin.

The initiative also introduced a competitive element. The vendor with the highest sales throughout the tournament walked away with a R5 000 cash prize, with the money intended to be reinvested into their business.

That winner was Masilo Mongingi, who described the opportunity as an important platform for aspiring entrepreneurs.

When Brands Invest Beyond the Logo

There is an increasingly important question around sports sponsorship in South Africa: what does a brand leave behind once the final whistle blows?

Reboost’s Tembisa activation offers one possible answer.

By involving vendors directly, the partnership connected brand visibility with economic participation. The tournament became a space where entrepreneurs could access customers, test their selling ability and potentially take home resources to strengthen their businesses.

For young South Africans watching the rise of side hustles, informal businesses and township economies, that distinction matters.

It shifts the conversation from sponsorship as advertising to sponsorship as opportunity.

Football, Community and the Bigger Picture

The Lerato Lamola Winter Games also provided Reboost with a natural environment for engaging fans through interactive activations and prize giveaways.

But the most interesting story sits away from the loudest activation.

It is the vendor behind the cooler box, the table or the temporary trading spot who gets another chance to make their business work.

That is where community sport can become more than a weekend fixture. When tournaments create commercial ecosystems around the action, they can help connect entertainment, entrepreneurship and local economic activity.

Reboost Energy Drink Marketing Manager Silungile Cebekhulu says investing in communities remains central to the brand’s purpose, with the company positioning local entrepreneurs as an important part of the communities it serves.

For Tembisa’s entrepreneurial crowd, the bigger win may therefore not have been the final score.

It was the opportunity to turn matchday energy into business momentum.
