Impossible is Not a Fact. Ubuntu is a Fact – Die Hulp Brings Community to the Screen

Impossible is Not a Fact. Ubuntu is a Fact

Gemini Twins Films (GTF) has always believed that storytelling is more than entertainment — it is a tool for social change. Guided by principles of social responsibility, the company produces TV series and films that empower communities, create jobs, and foster lasting development. Their latest production, Die Hulp, stands as a shining example of Ubuntu — humanness — in action.

Premiering on Friday, 5 September 2025, at 10:30 PM on DStv Channel 263, Die Hulp is more than just a gripping drama. It is the story of Johanna, a domestic worker who embarks on a courageous mission to rescue her children from a ruthless crime ring and human trafficking syndicate. While society often overlooks women like Johanna, the film highlights her resilience, integrity, and unwavering love for her family.

A Story Rooted in Humanity

Die Hulp shines a light on the harsh realities faced by domestic workers and exposes the scourge of human trafficking. At its heart, the film celebrates ordinary heroes who fight for justice, love, and dignity in a world obsessed with money and materialism. Its universal themes of justice, equality, family, and perseverance resonate with audiences across cultures and borders, making it a story of the world, told from South Africa.

The film stars Natasha Africa, Ruben Engel, Emile Hahn, Wilmare Mc Thomas, Jesse Frankson, Raymunda Diergaardt, Sherwhen “Miss Fierce” Ghall, Ashley Kampher, Gratia Taka, Damian Cornelius, Thembalethu Zwlele, Jerome Fredericks, and Candice Consani. Written by Anna-Marie Barry and produced by Ruben Engel and Florence Filron, it is directed by Theo E. Davids.

Empowering Vredendal Through Film

More than just a production, Die Hulp became a catalyst for change in the rural town of Vredendal, which suffers from unemployment rates as high as 60%, particularly among youth. GTF partnered with the community, local businesses, and government stakeholders to ensure the project left a lasting impact.

Through the film, residents were offered opportunities to:

  • Take on acting and extra roles
  • Join the crew as trainees
  • Provide catering and support services
  • Rent out homes and community spaces for filming
  • Participate in security, logistics, and local administration

Additionally, young filmmakers were trained on set, gaining valuable experience and access to bursaries and agency placements through the NFVF. With the support of the Matzikama Municipality, Vredendal has now been listed as a viable film service provider and location for future productions.

Ubuntu in Action

At its core, Die Hulp embodies the spirit of Ubuntu: people coming together, regardless of their background, to build something greater than themselves. By turning a small rural town into the heart of a groundbreaking production, Gemini Twins Films proved that what seems impossible can indeed be achieved when humanness guides the way.
