Downtown Music Publishing Africa Launches: Sheer Rebrands and Sets the Stage for an Expanded Suite of Services
After nearly 30 years at the forefront of music rights in Africa, Sheer Publishing Africa has officially rebranded as Downtown Music Publishing Africa (DMP Africa)—a strategic transformation that signifies much more than a new name. This bold move marks a deeper alignment with the global powerhouse Downtown Music Publishing, expanding opportunities for African creators on a global scale.

Effective 27 May 2025, the rebrand signals a new era of music rights management on the continent.
“This is a transformational moment, not only for us but for music rights management on the continent.”
As Thando Makhunga, Managing Director of DMP Africa, explains,
From Sheer to Downtown: A Legacy Elevated
Founded in 1996, Sheer Publishing Africa has long been a champion of African creativity, supporting music across genres such as Amapiano, Afro-Jazz, Kwaito, Gospel, and Hip-Hop. Over the years, it has built an esteemed catalogue of South African compositions and international titles. Now, that legacy continues under the Downtown banner—equipped with the global infrastructure and tools to elevate African talent even further.
Plugged Into a Global Network
As part of the Downtown Music Holdings ecosystem, DMP Africa now taps into a worldwide network that spans 145 countries. This connection allows African rights holders to benefit from state-of-the-art technology, global royalty administration, and world-class client service. It also opens up an expanded roster of partnerships, including global players like Warner Chappell, Concord, and regional indies such as Sintonia (Angola) and Vuga Music (Nigeria/U.S.).
“Our new name reflects our ability to plug directly into Downtown’s global expertise, while staying rooted in the nuances of the African music landscape.”
Makhunga notes,
Innovation and Transparency at the Core
In a landscape often clouded by complex contracts and opaque royalty systems, DMP Africa is setting a new benchmark for transparency and creator-first services. Among its innovations is the introduction of Neighbouring Rights Administration—an income stream that has long been overlooked in African markets.

Additionally, DMP Africa will be the first on the continent to implement Curve, Downtown’s real-time royalty accounting platform. Creators will now have instant access to detailed earnings data, empowering them with clarity and control.
A Strategic Vision for the Future
Downtown’s executive leadership is clear about the strategic importance of this rebrand.
“Through DMP Africa, we are investing not just in infrastructure, but in long-term relationships that will shape the future of the music industry.”
Emily Stephenson, President of Downtown Music Publishing, states,
“DMP Africa reflects our belief in the region’s creative power and our responsibility to support its continued expansion.”
Pieter van Rijn, CEO of Downtown Music, adds,
Supporting the Creator, Always
Despite the global shift, the heart of the company remains unchanged. The same passionate local team continues to lead the way with a deep understanding of the African music industry and an unwavering commitment to its creators.
“We’ve always rooted for the creator, the producer, the songwriter, and the record label, with a creative vision rooted in independence and creative freedom. Now we’ve got the global partners to go even further—for our creators, our culture, and our future.”
As Makhunga puts it,
Urban Lifestyle will continue to track how this monumental shift empowers the next generation of African music pioneers and reshapes the global music narrative—from Joburg to the world.
