HBO has unveiled a first-look image of Thuso Mbedu in Task, a gritty upcoming crime drama from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby. The series is set to premiere in September on HBO and will debut first on Showmax in South Africa later this year.
The Emmy-winning Mare of Easttown became a critical favourite for its raw storytelling and standout performances, so anticipation is high for Task, which promises another edge-of-your-seat exploration of crime, justice, and human resilience.

Four-time Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo leads the cast as an FBI agent heading a special task force assembled to end a brutal wave of violent robberies. Mbedu plays Aleah, a key member of the task force, bringing her signature intensity and emotional depth to the role.

The ensemble cast also features Emmy nominee Tom Pelphrey (Ozark), BAFTA nominee Emilia Jones (CODA), Jamie McShane (Wednesday, 1923), Alison Oliver (Saltburn), and Fabien Frankel (House of the Dragon).

For Mbedu, Task marks another major international milestone. After earning two International Emmy nominations for her role in Is’thunzi, she rose to global fame with acclaimed performances in The Underground Railroad (earning a Critics Choice nomination) and The Woman King, which topped the US box office. She has since expanded into voice work, with roles in Mufasa: The Lion King and Castlevania: Nocturne.

Task is one of several high-profile international titles making their African debut on Showmax, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to bringing world-class entertainment to local audiences.
