Google Launches Digital Growth Initiative to Boost South African Online Businesses

Google is giving South African online businesses a significant boost through the launch of its Digital Growth Initiative, a limited-time offering that combines education and funding to help businesses scale in today’s fast-evolving digital economy. With the focus squarely on digital marketing training, advertising support, and micro-financing, the initiative targets e-commerce platforms, travel and booking websites, and app developers operating in South Africa.

Advanced Digital Marketing Training Through Ads Academy

Understanding that up-skilling in digital marketing is crucial for sustainable growth, Google has partnered with Upskill to launch the Ads Academy. This bootcamp-style program delivers advanced training in ads optimization and digital marketing strategies, specifically tailored for online platforms and app developers.

Participants will benefit from a hands-on learning experience, complete with personalized mentorship — six months for online platforms and three months for app developers. The curriculum includes practical insights from industry experts, real-world success stories, and interactive learning formats. Google Ads credits will be integrated into the program to enable immediate application of newly acquired skills.

Ad Credits to Boost Visibility and Reach

To enhance digital presence and facilitate audience growth, the Ad Credits Program will provide businesses with free advertising credits. These can be used across Google’s ad formats, including Search Text Ads and Universal App Campaigns, helping businesses improve user acquisition and brand awareness.

By removing the initial financial barriers to advertising, the program enables businesses to test new markets, engage customers more effectively, and redirect their own funds toward areas like team expansion or product development.

Interest-Free Microloans for Strategic Growth

In partnership with Thundafund, the initiative will also provide interest-free microloans to help small businesses make essential purchases — such as new hardware, professional memberships, or digital tools — that could unlock growth opportunities or improve operations. These loans aim to bridge the gap between potential and performance by giving businesses the resources they need to scale.

With a well-rounded mix of training, advertising support, and accessible funding, Google’s Digital Growth Initiative is positioned to make a real impact on South Africa’s digital economy.

Applications are now open, and eligible businesses are encouraged to visit the official website to learn more about eligibility, program details, and how to apply.
