Luthando BU Mthembu Talks Vuyani’s Life Shift, Sex Scenes, and Bromance in Adulting Season 3
Luthando BU Mthembu has come a long way since his days on Big Brother Mzansi. The actor and musician has cemented his place in South African television as Vuyani, the charismatic ladies’ man in the Showmax Original series Adulting. Now, with Season 3 streaming, the stakes are higher than ever as Vuyani and his crew face their deepest fears, desires, and the challenge of keeping their brotherhood alive.
In an exclusive chat with Xabiso Ngqabe, BU opens up about Vuyani’s evolution, steamy intimacy scenes, and the emotional beats of the third and final season.

From Ladies’ Man to Club Owner
In Season 2, viewers saw Vuyani attempting to turn his life around despite grappling with unemployment and his penchant for romance. Now in Season 3, Vuyani steps up in a big way.
“Vuyani’s vice lies in his love for women. But he’s a healthy, intelligent, and well-grounded individual who knows how to leverage his strengths. Without giving too much away, I can say this season really shows his growth. He’s taking life head-on, and I’m excited for viewers to see how he navigates these changes.”
BU shares
What Makes Adulting So Successful?
According to BU, the magic of Adulting lies in the collaboration behind the scenes.
“Everyone brought something unique to the table. The team really encouraged us to infuse our creativity into our roles. For instance, I make music, and some of my tracks were featured in Season 1. I’m hoping my new releases make it into this season too. Even moments like the handstand sex scene from Season 1 were inspired by my yoga practice.”

Life Imitates Art?
BU acknowledges the challenges of separating himself from his character in the eyes of viewers.
“When you play a character convincingly, people sometimes struggle to distinguish between you and your role. For example, people saw Vuyani doing a frog jump with Portia (played by Thembi Seete) and assumed that’s who I am. It’s a testament to how well we bring these characters to life, but it’s a double-edged sword for actors.”

Navigating Intimacy Scenes
BU’s intimate moments with co-stars, particularly Thembi Seete, have often sparked conversation.
“Trust is everything. When it comes to sex scenes, I remember feeling awkward during my first one with Rosemary Zimu on Ayeye: Stripped. She guided me through it, and I learned a lot about creating a safe space for such vulnerable moments. On Adulting, we have intimacy coaches who make the process smoother.”
BU reflects

“I approach these scenes with the intention of staying true to the story. The frog-jump scene with Thembi was a collaborative moment where I brought in my creativity, like using my teeth to remove a g-string in another scene. Those ideas add to the character’s charm, but they always go through the proper channels for approval.”
He adds
Vuyani and Bonga: A Complex Bromance
The dynamic between Vuyani and Bonga is one of the show’s highlights.
“They challenge each other constantly. Bonga calls Vuyani out for taking shortcuts, while Vuyani keeps Bonga grounded when his success starts to change him. Their relationship is honest and layered, which makes it relatable.”

What to Expect in Season 3
While BU promises surprises in the intimacy department, he’s most excited about exploring Vuyani’s emotional vulnerability this season.
“Vuyani and Mpho are the only ones who haven’t fully opened up emotionally. This season, you’ll see Vuyani shed a tear. It’s a moment that I think will resonate deeply with the audience.”

As Adulting enters its final chapter, fans can expect more drama, heartfelt moments, and the unforgettable bromance that’s defined the series.
